Predictors of re-attendance at biennial screening mammography following a false positive referral: A study among women in the south of the Netherlands
CONCLUSION: Women with a FP referral are less likely to re-attend the screening programme if this referral occurs at their first screening round or when they undergo invasive diagnostic workup. Hospitals and screening organizations should prioritize informing women about the importance of re-attending the programme following a FP referral.PMID:38447293 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103702 (Source: Breast)

Reviewing Outcomes and Complications with the Use of Mesh in Breast Reduction Surgery
DiscussionThe use of mesh during reduction mammoplasty is a relatively modern innovation that does not appear to have a significantly different risk profile than that of traditional reduction procedures. There is limited cosmetic value based on currently available data. More objective future analysis is necessary in order to justify the use of mesh in reduction mammoplasty for its claimed cosmetic benefits.Level of Evidence IIIThis journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Gestational macromastia complicating pregnancy: A case report of unusual bilateral giant breasts in a patient who had no such problem in her previous pregnancies
We present a case of a 28-year-old G3P2L2 with a gestational age of 29  weeks complaining of massive bilateral breast enlargement for 6 months, accompanied by a threatened abortion. The masses began gradually after conception and increased gradually over time. Notably, the breasts had been unremarkable in her two previous pregnancies. The breast ultrasonography and mammography findings pointed to a benign neoplasm. Histopathology of the lesions reported bilateral ductal hyperplasia. Conservative management and close follow-up were initiated. A cesarean section was performed due to cord prolapse, and a 1.3 kg male bab...

Identifying factors that indicate the possibility of non-visible cases on mammograms using mammary gland content ratio estimated by artificial intelligence
ConclusionThe study findings highlight an estimated mammary gland content ratio of ≥50% in patients aged 40–59 years or in those with ≥40 mm CBT could be indicative factors for non-visibles. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Protocol to measure validity and reliability of colorectal, breast, cervical and lung cancer screening questions from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey: Methodology and design
This study aims to test the validity and reliability of lung, colorectal, cervical, and breast cancer screening questions from the 2021 and 2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). We present the protocol for a study designed to measure the validity and reliability of the NHIS cancer screening questions compared to EMRs from four US-based healthcare systems. We planned a randomized trial of a phone- vs web-based survey with NHIS questions that were previously revised based on extensive cognitive interviewing. Our planned sample size will be 1576 validity interviews, and 1260 interviews randomly assigned at 1 or 3 mont...

The impact of breast density notification on psychosocial outcomes in racial and ethnic minorities: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: A one-size approach to inform women about their BD may further disadvantage racial and ethnic minority women. BD notification and accompanying information should be tailored and translated to ensure readability and understandability by all women.PMID:38430905 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103693 (Source: Breast)

Primary MALT lymphoma of the breast: pathological and radiological characteristics
ConclusionPrimary MALT breast lymphomas are usually indolent and non-systemic, and local radiotherapy may effectively alleviate local symptoms. Radiological findings show overlap with benign morphological features, which can delay the diagnosis of this unusual etiology. Although further studies involving a larger cohort could help establish the clinical and radiological characteristics of primary breast MALT lymphomas, pathology remains the primary method of diagnosis.Trial registration numberUniversity Health Network Ethics Committee (CAPCR/UHN REB number 19 –5844), retrospectively registered. Effectiveness of hybrid digital breast tomosynthesis/digital mammography compared to digital mammography in women presenting for routine screening at Maroondah BreastScreen: Study protocol for a co-designed, non-randomised prospective trial
This study is a prospective trial embedded in population-based Australian screening services (Maroondah BreastScreen, Eastern Health, Victoria) comparing hybrid screening comprising DBT (mediolateral oblique view) and digital mammography (cranio-caudal view) with standard mammography screening in a concurrent group attending another screening site. All eligible women aged ≥40 years attending the Maroondah service for routine screening will be enrolled (unless they do not provide verbal consent and opt-out of hybrid screening; are unable to provide consent; or where a 'pushback' image on hybrid DBT cannot be obtained). Ea...

Privacy-Preserving Breast Cancer Classification: A Federated Transfer Learning Approach
This study proposes a novel transfer learning approach integrated into a federated learning framework to solve the limitations of limited labeled data and data privacy in collaborative healthcare settings. For breast cancer classification, the mammography and MRO images were gathered from three different medical centers. Federated learning, an emerging privacy-preserving paradigm, empowers multiple medical institutions to jointly train the global model while maintaining data decentralization. Our proposed methodology capitalizes on the power of pre-trained ResNet, a deep neural network architecture, as a feature extractor....
