When Life Gives You Lemons …A Lesson on Prosilience
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. This is a popular saying that is meant to evoke optimism in the face of adversity. This is an exercise on resilience. Resilience, simply put, is the ability to bounce back from adversity or the proverbial lemon. It is taking the sourness out of a crisis and making it more palatable through thoughtful planning. The value of resilience cannot be overstated. We survived a global pandemic but are still in the midst of an economic, political, and environmental crisis. (Source: Nurse Leader)

Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal that lemon extract prolongs Drosophila lifespan by affecting metabolism
In this study, we found that 0.05 g/L LE could significantly extend Drosophila lifespan and greatly improve antioxidative and anti-heat stress abilities. Furthermore, transcriptome and metabolome analyses of 10 d flies between the LE-fed and control groups suggested that the differentially expressed gene ppo1 (Prophenoloxidase 1) and metabolite L-DOPA (Levodopa) were co-enriched in the tyrosine metabolism pathway. Overall, our results indicate that affecting metabolism was the main reason for LE extending Drosophila lifespan.PMID:38052259 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygeno.2023.110751 (Source: Genomics)

Direct relationship between dimeric form and activity in the acidic copper – zinc superoxide dismutase from lemon
The copper – zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) from lemon (SOD_CL) is active in an acidic environment and resists proteolytic degradation. The enzyme occurs as a dimer, which has an indirect effect on the enzyme activity as the monomer retains only ∼ 35% of the activity. Here, the crystal structure of SOD_CL at 1.86   Å resolution is reported that may explain this peculiarity. The   crystal belonged to space group P21, with unit-cell parameters a = 61.11, b   =   74.55, c = 61.69   Å , β = 106.86 ° , and contained four molecules in the asymmetric unit. The overall structure of SOD_CL resembles that of CuZn...

Fabrication and characterization of biomimetic plant cuticles from pullulan - graphene oxide (PU-GO) and beeswax - stearic acid (BW-SA) for Citrus Limon Rosso preservation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 29:127776. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127776. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInspired by the natural plant cuticles, a novel strategy was proposed for the fabrication of biomimetic plant cuticles from pullulan-graphene oxide (PU-GO) and beeswax-stearic acid (BW-SA), which could serve as hydrophilic polysaccharides and hydrophobic waxes, respectively. PU-GO and PU-GO/BW-SA in different GO concentrations (0, 10, 30 and 50 μg/mL) were prepared, and their structural characteristics and basic properties were investigated. Results showed that PU-GO/BW-SA possessed a hydrophilic layer and a hydroph...

Essential oils of Pinus sylvestris, Citrus limon and Origanum vulgare exhibit high bactericidal and anti-biofilm activities against Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Streptococcus suis
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Oct 17;168:115703. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115703. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntimicrobial resistance is a worldwide problem that urges novel alternatives to treat infections. In attempts to find novel molecules, we assess the antimicrobial potential of seven essential oils (EO) of different plants (Pinus sylvestris, Citrus limon, Origanum vulgare, Cymbopogon martini, Cinnamomum cassia, Melaleuca alternifolia and Eucalyptus globulus) against two multidrug-resistant bacteria species, i.e. Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Streptococcus suis. EOs of P. sylvestris and C. limon revealed higher bacteric...

5,7-Dimethoxycoumarin ameliorates vincristine induced neuropathic pain: potential role of 5HT3 receptors and monoamines
This study was designed to investigate the possible analgesic and antiallodynic effects of 5,7-DMC in a murine model of VINP. Vincristine was administered to groups of BALB/c male mice (0.1 mg/kg intraperitoneally) once daily for 14 days to induce VINP. Thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia were quantified using the tail immersion test and von Frey filament application method. The levels of monoamine neurotransmitters and vitamin C in frontal cortical, striatal and hippocampal tissues, as well as the TNF-α level in plasma, were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography and ELISA respectively. On da...

Fungal diversity in homes and asthma morbidity among school-age children in New York City
This study aimed to test the hypothesis that fungal diversity is inversely associated with neighborhood asthma prevalence and identify specific fungal species associated with asthma morbidity.METHODS: Children aged 7-8 years (n = 347) living in higher (11-18%) and lower (3-9%) asthma prevalence neighborhoods were recruited within an asthma case-control study. Fungal communities were analyzed from floor dust using high-throughput DNA sequencing. A subset of asthmatic children (n = 140) was followed to age 10-11 to determine asthma persistence.RESULTS: Neighborhood asthma prevalence was inversely associated with fungal speci...
