The Art of Local Tissue Rearrangements in Burn Reconstruction
In recent decades, advances in surgical anatomy, burn pathophysiology, surgical techniques, and laser therapy have led to a paradigm shift in how we approach burn scars and contractures. Scar excision and replacement with uninjured tissue, which predominated burn scar treatment for much of the 20th century, is no longer appropriate in many patients. A scar ’s intrinsic ability to remodel can be induced by reducing tension on the scar using various techniques for local tissue rearrangement. Often in combination with laser therapy, local flaps can optimally camouflage a burn scar with adjacent normal tissue and restore a p...

Comparison of laser guidance and freehand hook-wire for CT-guided preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules
In VATS surgery, precise preoperative localization is particularly crucial when dealing with small-diameter pulmonary nodules located deep within the lung parenchyma. The purpose of this study was to compare t... (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery)

Atherectomy – The Options, the Evidence, and When Should it be Used
The use of atherectomy for peripheral vascular interventions (PVI) has increased exponentially and reached 18% of all PVI in the United States. The theoretical benefit on extensive arterial calcification relies on the concept of plaque modification and removal instead of displacement, as with other endovascular techniques. To date, there are no prospective studies comparing the different atherectomy technologies (directional, rotational, orbital, and laser). Moreover, most related prospective comparative studies have a small number of patients, and larger studies are single arm in patients with relatively mild to moderate ...

Review of surgical treatment of suprastomal collapse in tracheostomised children
CONCLUSION: Dynamic airway endoscopy in spontaneous breathing followed by MLS in general anaesthesia should always be performed before decannulation. It is particularly important to visualise all segments of the airway during spontaneous breathing. The decision regarding the best surgical option for each child is based on the type and localisation of SSC, as well as on the patient's medical and surgical history and age.PMID:38568240 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-024-01448-5 (Source: HNO)

Analysis of the Laser Epilation in Pilonidal Disease Trial
To the Editor We read with great interest the recent article by Minneci and colleagues. The study ’s findings that laser epilation (LE) significantly reduced pilonidal disease recurrence are indeed promising. The study offers a novel perspective on pilonidal disease management. However, we would like to address additional aspects concerning the study design, statistical analysis, and interpret ation of findings that require further scrutiny. (Source: JAMA Surgery)

Sentinel lymph node identification using NIR-II ultrabright Raman nanotags on preclinical models
Biomaterials. 2024 Mar 27;308:122538. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2024.122538. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanotags have garnered much attention as promising bioimaging contrast agent with ultrahigh sensitivity, but their clinical translation faces challenges including biological and laser safety. As breast sentinel lymph node (SLN) imaging agents, SERS nanotags used by local injection and only accumulation in SLNs, which were removed during surgery, greatly reduce biological safety concerns. But their clinical translation lacks pilot demonstration on large animals close to huma...

Surgical outcomes of endoscopic enucleation of the prostate in community aging males with or without preoperative urinary retention
ConclusionsBoth ThuLEP and B-TUEP were effective in treating BPH-related bladder outlet obstruction. Our study identified more pronounced changes in IPSS total, IPSS voiding, and prostate-specific antigens within the UR group. Moreover, the rate of postoperative UR in this group was not higher than that observed in the non-UR group. Our study also revealed that the presumed benefits of laser surgery in reducing blood loss were less pronounced for patients with UR. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Laser fluorescence assessment of dental caries arrest with two silver fluoride agents in patients with special needs – a preliminary report
ConclusionA single application of AgF/KI or AgF/SnF2 has high predictability (over 90%) for achieving arrest in active caries lesions in adult patients with SN and high caries risk. Clinical assessment should use visual-tactile examination combined with LF readings to detect lesions that are still progressing and that require additional treatments. Future studies should compare these AgF modalities with SDF and explore factors such as time between applications and the need for repeated applications.Trial registrationThe study was registered with the Australian Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12621001139864p) on 23/08/2021. ...
