The potential of lactose to inhibit cereulide biosynthesis of emetic Bacillus cereus in milk
This study aims to investigate the potential role of lactose on cereulide biosynthesis by emetic Bacillus cereus in dairy matrices. The cereulide yields in whole milk and lactose-free milk were investigated using the emetic reference strain F4810/72. To eliminate the influence of complex food substrates, the LB medium model was further used to characterize the effect of lactose on cereulide produced by F4810/72 and five other emetic B. cereus strains. Results showed that the lactose-free milk displayed a 13-fold higher amount of cereulide than whole milk, but the cereulide level could be reduced by 91 % when the lactose co...

Purification, biochemical characterization of a lectin from marine sponge Ircinia strobilina and its effect on the inhibition of bacterial biofilms
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Dec 11;95(suppl 2):e20220619. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320220619. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTA new lectin from marine sponge Ircinia strobilina, denominated IsL, was isolated by combination of affinity chromatography in Guar gum matrix followed by size exclusion chromatography. IsL was able to agglutinate native and enzymatically treated rabbit erythrocytes, being inhibited by galactosides, such as α-methyl-D-galactopyranoside, β-methyl-D-galactopyranoside and α-lactose. IsL hemagglutinating activity was stable at neutral to alkaline pH, however the lectin loses its activity at 40° C. The molecul...

Effects of nanoselenium supplementation on lactation performance, nutrient digestion and mammary gland development in dairy cows
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the influence of nanoselenium (NANO-Se) addition on milk production, milk fatty acid synthesis, the development and metabolism regulation of mammary gland in dairy cows. Forty-eight Holstein dairy cows averaging 720 ± 16.8 kg of body weight, 66.9 ± 3.84 d in milk (dry matter intake [DIM]) and 35.2 ± 1.66 kg/d of milk production were divided into four treatments blocked by DIM and milk yields. Treatments were control group, low-Se (LSe), medium-Se (MSe) and high-Se (HSe) with 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mg Se, respectively, from NANO-Se per kg dietary dry matter (DM). Production o...

Glycan-Driven Formation of Raft-Like Domains with Hierarchical Periodic Nanoarrays on Dendrimersome Synthetic Cells
Biomacromolecules. 2023 Dec 8. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c01027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe accurate spatial segregation into distinct phases within cell membranes coordinates vital biochemical processes and functionalities in living organisms. One of nature's strategies to localize reactivity is the formation of dynamic raft domains. Most raft models rely on liquid-ordered L0 phases in a liquid-disordered Ld phase lacking correlation and remaining static, often necessitating external agents for phase separation. Here, we introduce a synthetic system of bicomponent glycodendrimersomes coassembled from Janus dendrimer...

Oregano essential oil modulates colonic homeostasis and intestinal barrier function in fattening bulls
Oregano essential oil (OEO) primarily contains phenolic compounds and can serve as a dietary supplement for fattening bulls. However, the precise molecular mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains largely elusive. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of adding OEO to diet on the integrity of the intestinal barrier, composition of the colonic microbiome, and production of microbial metabolites in fattening bulls. Our goal was to provide insights into the utilization of plant essential oil products in promoting gastrointestinal health and welfare in animals. We employed amplicon sequencing and metabolome sequenc...
