Associations of retinal microvascular caliber with large arterial function and structure: A population ‐based study of 11‐12 year‐olds and mid‐life adults
ConclusionsNarrower retinal arterioles and wider venules are associated with large arterial function as early as mid ‐childhood. Associations strengthen by mid‐life and also extend to arterial structure, although effect sizes remain small. (Source: Microcirculation)

BCR ‐ABL Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors Promote Pathological Changes in Dilator Phenotype in the Human Microvasculature
ConclusionIncubating human arterioles with imatinib or nilotinib switches the mediator of FMD from vasoprotective nitric oxide to pro ‐inflammatory H2O2. (Source: Microcirculation)

Adenosine Kinase Inhibition Enhances Microvascular Dilator Function and Improves Left Ventricle Diastolic Dysfunction
ConclusionsOur results indicate that ADK inhibition selectively enhances microvascular vasodilator function, whereby it improves LV perfusion and LV contractile function under metabolic and hemodynamic stress. (Source: Microcirculation)

Non ‐invasive measurement of retinal permeability in a diabetic rat model
ConclusionsThis novel imaging methodology in combination with mathematical quantification allows retinal permeability to be non ‐invasively and accurately measured at multiple time points in the same animal. In addition, this technique is a non‐toxic, rapid, sensitive and cost‐effective alternative to the Evans blue assay. (Source: Microcirculation)

The impact of maternal asthma during pregnancy on offspring retinal microvascular structure and its relationship to placental growth factor production in utero
This study explored whether maternal asthma in pregnancy is associated with the development of offspring microvascular structure and if it was related to biomarkers of angiogenesisin utero. Children aged 4 to 6 years, born to either asthmatic mothers (n=38) or healthy controls (n=25) had their retinal microvascular structure examined. Maternal plasma placental growth factor (PlGF) concentrations at 18 and 36 weeks gestation were measured. There was a significant global difference in all retinal microvascular measures between children of asthmatic mothers relative to controls and increased retinal venular tortuosity in chil...

Sigma ‐1 Receptor Activation‐Induced Glycolytic ATP Production and Endothelial Barrier Enhancement
ConclusionActivation of σ1 enhances endothelial barrier function and modulates the ratio of glycolytic versus mitochondrial ATP production. These novel findings suggest that endothelial σ1 may prove beneficial as a novel therapeutic target for reducing microvascular hyperpermeability and counteracting mitochondrial dysfu nction.
