Neurobehavioral sex-related differences in Nf1+/ − mice: female show a “camouflaging”-type behavior
ConclusionsOur results suggested a sexually dimorphic impact ofNf1+/ − mutation in hippocampal neurochemistry, and autistic-like behaviors. For the first time, we identified a “camouflaging”-type behavior in females of an animal model of ASD, which masked their autistic traits. Accordingly, like observed in human disorder, in this animal model of ASD, females show larger anxiety levels but better executive functions and production of normative social patterns, togethe r with an imbalance of inhibition/excitation ratio. Contrary, males have more externalizing disorders, such as hyperactivity and repetitive behaviors, ...

Prospective paired crossover evaluation of potential impact of investigator gender on perceived pain intensity early after acute or scheduled surgery
ConclusionsMain findings of lower pain intensity reported by males to a female than to a male investigator early after surgery in this paired crossover study in mixed postoperative patients, indicate that potential impact of investigator gender on pain perception should be considered and further evaluated in clinical bedside practice.Trial registration Retrospectively registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov research database on 24th June 2019 with TRN number NCT03968497. Lipidomic landscape of circulating extracellular vesicles isolated from adolescents exposed to ethanol intoxication: a sex difference study
ConclusionsOur results suggest that binge ethanol drinking in human female adolescents leads to a higher content of plasma EV lipid species associated with EV biogenesis and the propagation of neuroinflammatory responses than in males. In addition, we discovered greater differences in lipid abundance between sexes in WT mice compared to TLR4-KO mice. Our findings also support the potential use of EV-enriched lipids as biomarkers of ethanol-induced neuroinflammation during adolescence. (Source: Biology of Sex Differences)

Serum metabolomics profiling by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy  reveals sexual dimorphism and masculinization of intermediate metabolism in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
ConclusionsSerum metabolomics profiling by proton nuclear magnetic resonance  spectroscopy reveals sexual dimorphism, and masculinization of intermediate metabolism in women with PCOS, further suggesting a role for sex and sex hormones in the regulation of intermediate metabolism. Deciphering the sex bias in housekeeping gene expression in adipose tissue: a comprehensive meta-analysis of transcriptomic studies
ConclusionsThis sex-based research proves that certain classical housekeeping genes fail to function adequately as controls when analyzing human adipose tissue considering sex as a variable. We confirmRPL19 andPPIA suitability as sex-unbiased human and mouse housekeeping genes derived from sex-specific expression profiles, and propose new ones such asRPS8 andUBB. Sex differences in the transcriptome of extracellular vesicles secreted by fetal neural stem cells and effects of chronic alcohol exposure
ConclusionsThe EV transcriptome is distinctly different from, and more sex-variant than, the transcriptome of cell-of-origin NSCs. Ethanol, a common teratogen, results in dose-dependent sorting of RNA transcripts from NSCs to EVs which may reprogram the EV-mediated endocrine environment during neurogenesis. Sex-dependent variation in cartilage adaptation: from degeneration to regeneration
AbstractDespite acknowledgement in the scientific community of sex-based differences in cartilage biology, the implications for study design remain unclear, with many studies continuing to arbitrarily assign demographics. Clinically, it has been well-established that males and females differ in cartilage degeneration, and accumulating evidence points to the importance of sex differences in the field of cartilage repair. However, a comprehensive review of the mechanisms behind this trend and the influence of sex on cartilage regeneration has not yet been presented. This paper aims to summarize current findings regarding sex...

Aerobic exercise improves executive functions in females, but not males, without the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism
ConclusionsThese results suggest that future randomized controlled trials should take into consideration BDNF genotype and biological sex to better understand the beneficial effects of AT on cognitive function in vascular cognitive impairment to maximize the beneficial effects of exercise and help establish exercise as medicine for cognitive health. Effects of 5 α-dihydrotestosterone on the modulation of monocyte/macrophage response to Staphylococcus aureus: an in vitro study
ConclusionsWe found that DHT acts as an inflammatory modulator in the monocyte/macrophage response induced byS. aureus and females exhibit a better immune defence response against this pathogen. (Source: Biology of Sex Differences)

CPT1A in AgRP neurons is required for sex-dependent regulation of feeding and thirst
ConclusionsOur results highlight that fatty acid metabolism and CPT1A in AgRP neurons show marked sex differences and play a relevant role in the neuronal processes necessary for the maintenance of whole-body fluid and energy balance. (Source: Biology of Sex Differences)

Sex differences in fetal intracranial volumes assessed by in utero MR imaging
ConclusionsWe have described the growth of the major intracranial compartments in fetuses between 18 and 37gw. We have shown a number of statistically different features between male and female fetuses, but we have not detected any asymmetry in volumes of the fetal cerebral hemispheres. Sex differences in the percentage of IRF5 positive B cells are associated with higher production of TNF- α in women in response to TLR9 in humans
ConclusionsTaken together, our data contribute to the understanding of sex differences in immune responses and may identify IRF5 as a potential therapeutic target to reduce harmful B cell-mediated immune responses in women. (Source: Biology of Sex Differences)

Sex differences in the associations of body size and body shape with platelets in the UK Biobank cohort
ConclusionsCompeting factors determine the associations of BMI with platelet count. Factors with sexually dimorphic action (likely thrombopoietin, inflammatory cytokines, or cortisol), contribute to a positive association, more prominently in women than in men, while age-dependent factors (likely related to liver damage and fibrosis), contribute to an inverse association, more prominently in men than in women. Sex differences in hearing impairment due to diet-induced obesity in CBA/Ca mice
ConclusionsFemale mice are more resistant to the negative effects of an HFD on body weight, metabolism, and hearing. Females showed increased peripheral and intra-cochlear adiponectin and AdipoR1 levels, and HC ribbon synapses. These changes may mediate resistance to HFD-induced hearing loss seen in female mice.
