Prospective Surveillance of Primary Healthcare Presentations for Scabies and Bacterial Skin Infections in Fiji, 2018-2019
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2021 May 24:tpmd201459. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.20-1459. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTScabies, impetigo, and other skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are highly prevalent in many tropical, low-middle income settings, but information regarding their burden of disease is scarce. We conducted a surveillance of presentations of scabies and SSTIs, including impetigo, abscesses, cellulitis, and severe SSTI, to primary health facilities in Fiji. We established a monthly reporting system over the course of 50 weeks (July 2018-June 2019) for scabies and SSTIs at all 42 public primary health facilities in the Nor...

Prospective surveillance for invasive Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococcal infections in a setting with high community burden of scabies and impetigo
Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococcus (GAS) are pyogenic Gram-positive bacteria and the most common causes of impetigo and other skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) (Steer et al., 2009b). Both S. aureus and GAS can lead to invasive disease, imposing considerable health burdens globally (Schuchat et al., 2001). These diseases are recognized as important causes of global morbidity and mortality with case fatality rates (CFRs) of 15 –50% for invasive S. aureus (iSA) (Tong et al., 2015) and 8–32% for invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) (Sanyahumbi et al., 2016). Dermatological opinions are imperative in ambulatory and acute care settings for pediatric skin disorders - HL-SkinPed
CONCLUSIONS: The significant discordance between the pediatricians and the dermatologist suggests the need for a greater emphasis on dermatological disorders in medical training programs and for closer collaboration between disciplines for the benefit of younger patients.PMID:33994265 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2021.04.010 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Blistering Rash in an Adolescent
An 11-year-old boy with a history of atopic dermatitis developed a progressive, pruritic rash on his face and extremities over 2 weeks. Bullous and superficially eroded crusted red plaques were located throughout the bilateral upper and lower extremities (Figure). He was empirically treated with cefadroxil 500 mg twice daily for 1 week along with topical mupirocin ointment. Bacterial culture showed heavy growth of methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, confirming the diagnosis of bullous impetigo. (Source: The Journal of Pediatrics)

344 The infodemiology of impetigo: Examining trends and seasonality of public interest
Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that commonly presents in children with yellowish crust. However, the current knowledge on public interest and the seasonality of impetigo is limited. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the infodemiology of impetigo. Google Trends was searched between January 2004- December 2019 for the term “impetigo” in the USA and worldwide to gain information on public interest. Relative search volume (RSV) data from the USA (a Northern Hemisphere country) and Australia (a Southern Hemisphere Country) was also examined to assess trends in seasonality. Topical antibacterials in dermatology
Debabrata BandyopadhyayIndian Journal of Dermatology 2021 66(2):117-125 Topical antibacterials are commonly used for superficial pyodermas such as impetigo and treatment or prevention of infections following minor cuts, abrasions, burns, and surgical wounds. Several antibiotics and antiseptics are available for use in different indications. One of the major uses of topical antibacterials is acne in which benzoyl peroxide is the drug of the first choice either singly or in combination with antibiotics or retinoids. Mupirocin and fusidic acid are the two most commonly used antibiotics for the treatment of superficial pyoder...

Treatment of Impetigo and Antimicrobial Resistance
CONCLUSIONS: While published antimicrobial stewardship guidelines have focused on systemic antibiotics, few studies have attempted to evaluate topical antibiotic prescribing practices for impetigo treatment. Many of the topical impetigo treatments currently in use have developed resistance. The appropriate use of topical ozenoxacin can help eradicate impetigo while minimizing AMR.J Drugs Dermatol. 20(4):366-372. doi:10.36849/JDD.5795.PMID:33852242 | DOI:10.36849/JDD.2021.5795 (Source: Journal of Drugs in Dermatology)
