Prospective surveillance for invasive Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococcal infections in a setting with high community burden of scabies and impetigo

Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococcus (GAS) are pyogenic Gram-positive bacteria and the most common causes of impetigo and other skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) (Steer et al., 2009b). Both S. aureus and GAS can lead to invasive disease, imposing considerable health burdens globally (Schuchat et al., 2001). These diseases are recognized as important causes of global morbidity and mortality with case fatality rates (CFRs) of 15 –50% for invasive S. aureus (iSA) (Tong et al., 2015) and 8–32% for invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) (Sanyahumbi et al., 2016).
