28325 Artificial intelligence (AI) in dermatology: An application in sub-Saharan Africa
Introduction: The average number of dermatologists worldwide is 1 in 60,000. However the density is unequally distributed, most dermatologists being in urban areas. However in Tanzania and Madagascar, the number falls to one in 2 and 3 million, respectively. How is it possible to maintain dermatologic expertise when the number of dermatologists is so low and that so little data exist on African skin? Proposed solution: 80% of skin problems in children are limited to 5 dermatoses. These are atopic dermatitis, scabies, tinea, impetigo and insect bites. 27662 National estimates and predictors of emergency department utilization for impetigo among the United States pediatric population
Despite the large burden of impetigo in childhood and high frequency of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits for skin conditions, limited information exists on the use of emergency care for impetigo among US pediatrics. Our study aimed to generate national estimates of ED utilization for impetigo and to identify sociodemographic predictors of impetigo-related ED visits. This was a cross-sectional analysis of impetigo-related ED visits in children ages 1-17 using nationally representative data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (2013-2015). Genetically Determined Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation and Hundreds of Health Outcomes in the UK Biobank and the FinnGen Population: A Phenome-Wide Mendelian Randomization Study
ConclusionsGenetically determined CRP was robustly associated with several diseases in the UK Biobank and the FinnGen population, but could not be replicated, suggesting heterogeneous and non-repeatable effects of CRP across populations. This implies that interventions at CRP are unlikely to result in decreased risk for most human diseases in the general population but may benefit specific high-risk populations. The limited causal evidence and potential double-sided effects remind us to be cautious about CRP interventions. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

A facility and community-based assessment of scabies in rural Malawi
Conclusions/SignificancePrevalence of scabies in our setting was very high suggesting that scabies is a major public health problem in parts of Malawi. Further work is required to more accurately assess the burden of disease and develop appropriate public health strategies for its control. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Emerging Treatment Strategies for Impetigo in Endemic and Nonendemic Settings: A Systematic Review
Clin Ther. 2021 May 27:S0149-2918(21)00208-3. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2021.04.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Impetigo affects approximately 162 million children worldwide at any given time. Lack of consensus on the most effective treatment strategy for impetigo and increasing antibiotic resistance continue to drive research into newer and alternative treatment options. We conducted a systematic review to assess the effectiveness of new treatments for impetigo in endemic and nonendemic settings.METHODS: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Embase via Scopus for studies that explored treatme...

Prospective Surveillance of Primary Healthcare Presentations for Scabies and Bacterial Skin Infections in Fiji, 2018-2019
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2021 May 24:tpmd201459. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.20-1459. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTScabies, impetigo, and other skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are highly prevalent in many tropical, low-middle income settings, but information regarding their burden of disease is scarce. We conducted a surveillance of presentations of scabies and SSTIs, including impetigo, abscesses, cellulitis, and severe SSTI, to primary health facilities in Fiji. We established a monthly reporting system over the course of 50 weeks (July 2018-June 2019) for scabies and SSTIs at all 42 public primary health facilities in the Nor...
