Evaluating an integrated nano zero-valent iron column system for emerging contaminants removal from different wastewater matrices - Identification of transformation products
In this study, the performance of a column system consisting of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) incorporated into a cationic resin and synthesized from green tea extract with the addition of persulfate for the elimination of selected pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors from wastewater is evaluated. Ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ketoprofen were the target pharmaceuticals from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs group, while bisphenol A was the target endocrine disruptor. In this context, different real wastewater effluent matrices were investigated: anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), upflow anaerobic ...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 206: Pharmaceutical and Recreational Drug Usage Patterns during and Post COVID-19 Determined by Wastewater-Based Epidemiology
Pugajeva Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) was applied to evaluate the consumption trends of pharmaceuticals (i.e., antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antiepileptics, antihypertensives, and others), as well as recreational drugs (caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine), in Latvia from December 2020 to July 2023. The time period covers both the COVID-19 pandemic and the post-pandemic periods; therefore, the impact of the implemented restrictions and the consequences of the illness in terms of the usage of pharmaceuticals thereon were investigated. Additionally, the seasonality and impact of the seasonal flu...

Photoinduced selective perfluoroalkylation of terminal alkynes < em > via < /em > electron donor-acceptor complexes
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Feb 8. doi: 10.1039/d4cc00105b. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerein, we report a photoinduced selective perfluoroalkylation of terminal alkynes driven by the noncovalent interaction between a thymol anion and fluoroalkyl iodides. By precisely tuning the reaction solvent, a wide range of 37 structurally diverse perfluoroalkylated alkynes and alkenes, including ibuprofen, empagliflozin, galactose, isoxepac and indomethacin, were obtained in up to 92% yields. Mechanistic studies reveal the formation of EDA complexes between the thymol anion and fluoroalkyl iodides. This strategy may provide an import...

Neuromodulation of acid-sensitive ion channels (ASICs) and anti-inflammatory potential by Lichenxanthone in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio): Experimental and docking studies
Chem Biodivers. 2024 Feb 8:e202400063. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202400063. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe xanthone Lichenxanthone did not show toxic effects (LC50 > 1.0 mg/mL). Lichenxanthone prevented nociceptive behavior induced by acidic saline, and its analgesic effect was blocked by amiloride, highlighting the involvement of neuromodulation of acid-sensitive ion channels (ASICs). In the analysis of anti-inflammatory activity, concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/mL of Lichenxanthone reduced the edema induced by k-carrageenan 3.5%, observed from the fourth hour of analysis. This effect was similar to that observed with ibup...

Physiological responses on the reproductive, metabolism and stress endpoints of Astyanax lacustris females (Teleostei: Characiformes) after diclofenac and ibuprofen exposure
Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2024 Feb 4;278:109846. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpc.2024.109846. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiclofenac (DCF) and ibuprofen (IBU) are pharmaceutical compounds frequently detected in aquatic compartments worldwide. Several hazard effects including developmental abnormalities and redox balance impairment have been elucidated in aquatic species, but multiple endocrine evaluations are scarce. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the disruptive physiological effects and toxicity of DCF and IBU isolated and combined, using females of the native freshwater teleost Astyanax lacustris. In ...

Treatment and rehabilitation of post-traumatic elbow stiffness with heterotopic ossification
CONCLUSION: Surgical excision of heterotopic bones and elbow contracture release combined with postoperative rehabilitation and preventative HO measures can be an effective treatment for cases of post-traumatic elbow stiffness combined with HO, for which conservative treatment is ineffective.PMID:38311891 | DOI:10.2340/jphs.v59.18363 (Source: Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery)

Treatment of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Premature Infants: Intravenous Paracetamol or Oral Ibuprofen?
CONCLUSION: Intravenous paracetamol has equal efficacy compared to oral ibuprofen in the treatment of PDA. Also, it seems to be associated with a lower risk of hyperbilirubinemia following the treatment.PMID:38310434 | PMC:PMC10685834 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2023.50 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)
