Global incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and healthy life expectancy (HALE) for 371 diseases and injuries in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990-2021: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Detailed, comprehensive, and timely reporting on population health by underlying causes of disability and premature death is crucial to understanding and responding to complex patterns of disease and injury burden over time and across age groups, sexes, and locations. The availability of disease burden estimates can promote evidence-based interventions that enable public health researchers, policy makers, and other professionals to implement strategies that can mitigate diseases. It can also facilitate m...

Valuing the health benefits of nature-based recreational physical activity in England
Environ Int. 2024 Apr 16;187:108667. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2024.108667. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhysical activity (PA) reduces the risk of several non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Natural environments support recreational PA. Using data including a representative cross-sectional survey of the English population, we estimated the annual value of nature-based PA conducted in England in 2019 in terms of avoided healthcare and societal costs of disease. Population-representative data from the Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment (MENE) survey (n = 47,580; representing 44,386,756) were used to estimate the ...

Prognostic value of growth differentiation factor ‐15 in heart failure among whole ejection fraction phenotypes
ConclusionsGDF-15 is identified as an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes in HF patients across the entire EF spectrum in the context of CHD. Integrating GDF-15 into the MAGGIC risk score-based model enhances its prognostic capability for adverse outcomes in the general HF population. This incremental prognostic effect was observed specifically in the HFpEF subgroup and not in other subgroups. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Association of Ultraprocessed Food Consumption with Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Among Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes: Findings from the UK Biobank
ConclusionHigher UPF intakes are associated with increased hazards of CVD among individuals with T2D, and the association is partly mediated through worsening biomarkers of renal function, lipid metabolism, inflammation, and body weight. (Source: Molecular Nutrition and Food Research)

Response to “Characteristics of the prothrombotic milieu in mitral stenosis patients managed with direct oral anticoagulants”
We read Dr. Jolobe's valuable comments regarding our study. We believe that any recommendation on the utility of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in mitral stenosis (MS) patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) should only be based on the recently published INVICTUS trial [1] providing reliable evidence on the superiority of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) compared to DOACs. However, the excellent time-in-therapeutic-range in the VKA group in INVICTUS [1] is in contrast with the current real-world experience in countries with a high prevalence of rheumatic heart disease [2], which opens a debate on the transferability of INVI...

One in Four People With Schizophrenia or Bipolar Have Multiple Physical Health Problems
Astudy inLancet Psychiatry reports that adults with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are more than twice as likely as those without these disorders to have multiple physical health problems like heart disease or diabetes. Further, the presence of multiple physical problems was more common in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder than the presence of multiple psychiatric disorders.“While health services and treatment guidelines often operate on the assumption that individuals have a single principal diagnosis, these results attest to the clinical complexity many people with severe mental illness face in relation ...
