Survival outcomes for congenital heart disease from Southern Malaysia: results from a congenital heart disease registry
Conclusions Eight out of 10 patients with CHDs survived up to 15 years of age. However, 10% of CHDs who require intervention die before the procedure. Thus, improving congenital cardiac surgery and enhancing the overall healthcare system are crucial to improve survival. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

Safety and feasibility pilot study of continuous low-dose maternal supplemental oxygen in fetal single ventricle heart disease
CONCLUSIONS: This pilot phase 1 clinical trial indicates low-dose maternal supplemental oxygen therapy is safe and well tolerated in pregnancies diagnosed with fetal SVP. However, our protocol was not associated with any significant changes in fetal circulatory physiology or improvements in early neurologic or neurodevelopmental outcomes. Emerging therapies: Potential roles of SGLT2 inhibitors in the management of pulmonary hypertension
Respir Med. 2024 Apr 15:107631. doi: 10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107631. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPulmonary hypertension (PH) is a pathophysiological disorder that may involve multiple clinical conditions and may be associated with a variety of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease (PH-LHD) currently lacks targeted therapies, while Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), despite approved treatments, carries considerable residual risk. Metabolic dysfunction has been linked to the pathogenesis and prognosis of PH through various studies, with emerging metabolic agents offering ...

Premature Ventricular Complexes: Assessing Burden Density in a Large National Cohort to Better Define Optimal ECG Monitoring Duration
Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) burden is a risk factor for heart failure and cardiovascular death in patients with structural heart disease. Long-term ECG monitoring can have a significant impact on PVC burden evaluation by further defining PVC distribution patterns. (Source: Heart Rhythm)

Assessment of patient-reported outcomes measures in heart failure: a systematic review
AbstractHeart failure (HF) is a prevalent global disease, particularly impacting developed countries. With the world ’s aging population, HF’s impact on the quantity and quality of life is expected to grow. This review aims to ascertain the frequency, characteristics, and properties of all patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) studied in HF patients. We searched Ovid/Medline and Web of Science for origina l articles about PROMs performed in adults with HF. Using pre-established quality criteria for measurement properties, an overall rating was assigned to evaluate and compare different instruments. The quality of ...

Outcomes after cancer diagnosis in children and adult patients with congenital heart disease in Sweden: a registry-based cohort study
Conclusions Cancer-related deaths constituted 1.8% of all mortalities across all CHD patients. Among CHD patients with cancer, 18.3% died, with cancer being the cause in 71.9% of cases. Although CHD patients have an increased cancer risk, their mortality risk post-diagnosis does not significantly differ from non-CHD patients after adjustements and exclusion of patients with genetic syndromes and transplant recipients. However, CHD patients with genetic syndromes and concurrent cancer appear to be a vulnerable group. (Source: BMJ Open)

MicroRNA-155 and exosomal microRNA-155: Small pieces in  the cardiovascular diseases puzzle
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Apr 1;257:155274. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155274. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroRNAs (miRs, miRNAs) are known to have a part in various human illnesses, such as those related to the heart. One particular miRNA, miR-155, has been extensively studied and has been found to be involved in hematopoietic lineage differentiation, immunity, viral infections, inflammation, as well as vascular remodeling. These processes have all been connected to cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, diabetic heart disease, coronary artery disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. The impacts of miR-155 depend ...
