What's the deal with "Auvelity"? (new NMDA receptor antagonist)
Got a notification that some biotech stock shot up about 35% today. Turns out that company just got FDA approval for "auvelity" and is marketing it as the greatest thing to come out for depression treatment since SSRIs. Looking into it the chemical formulation seems to be "dextromethorphan HBr -bupropion HCl", and it has been challenging finding peer reviewed articles about how well it really works. Perhaps I'm just too dumb to understand the pharmacology behind it, but isn't this... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

'How Complex Systems Fail' and mental healthcare system design
I recently ran across this short summary of considerations for 'complex systems' in healthcare and was struck by how relevant some of the points were in relation to attempts to design complex systems to, say, 'prevent suicide,' especially considering the role of health care provider. I think it's worthy of discussion and am interested in others' opinions on it, especially if you've been in the role of trying to apply increasingly complex protocols, procedures, and rules relating to suicide... Thinking about leaving medical school for good. Need some advice (serious)
I'm about 1.5 months into medical school now and to be honest I'm not sure what I expected coming here, but I am really not enjoying it (I know this is normal for first year). I've been doing good so far and have honored all of my tests, but I still am not enjoying it. For the first time in my life I find myself suffering from pretty severe depression and anxiety (I'm already getting help) and I just can't imagine continuing to do this for the next 7+ years of my life. Prior to coming to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Blurry vision with SSRIs
Hi all, I have a female patient in her late 50s who (very reluctantly) started taking lexapro for depression and has has significant benefit from it. She's been on it for a few months now but just told me that her vision became notably more blurry since she started this med. She had some age related changes in vision prior to starting lexapro and had used reading glasses before but said this was a pretty precipitous change. I'm going to ask her to get an eye exam and am not concerned... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Getting back into anesthesiology residency
I completed two years of an anesthesiology program after finishing IM residency. Skipped TY year went straight to CA1 and finished CA2 year. I had some horrible personal things happen to me after my CA1 year. Depression set in. Continued on for a year, but with the strain of residency and my unresolved depression, I couldn't do it anymore. I resigned in good standing with my program. Even got 94th percentile on ITE my CA2 year, but just couldn't keep going. I'm doing great now. Back... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
