Hope and perseverance
Hi everyone! I have no issues but a brief story about hope and perseverance which might help those who are in a similar situation either AMG or IMG. I am a Non-US IMG who graduated in 2013. During a government required 1 year internship, I started to prep for my Step 1. I studied hard for it but ended up failing. I was depressed and angry at the results but determined. I started the process again, doubling the study hours, putting myself under more stress and completely isolating myself... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Apply early decision MD while accepted DO
More of an ethical question. I had to turn down OOS MD acceptance for unexpected family reasons but have an in-state DO acceptance that starts in late July. I really want to go to the local MD school (which is less competitive than the OOS one I was accepted to) but applied late last year. If I reapply early decision to that 1 school this week (will have result by 8/1) is this professional suicide? Do I be upfront and tell them I really want to apply to only them? Or do it secretly? I do... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice on Wet Lab Research/Quitting
Hello! I have been currently volunteering at a lab for the past couple of months (approximately 8 to 10 months) and was usually there just shadowing a graduate student in the past. However, I actually proposed an idea to my PI a couple of months ago, and he was kind enough to let me conduct my own project. A couple of weeks later, I hit a very grave rough patch. My mom became severely sick due to a cardiac issue that had gone unidagnosed and I was suffering from severe anxiety/depression due... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pathology resident suicide
So I have learned of a residency program from an IM friend in Missouri that a pathology resident committed suicide earlier this year. I haven’t heard any other news about it but I thought I would share since it has been so silent. From what I understand it sounds like the resident went to a malignant place. Mental health is so important and so under appreciated. Make sure you take care of your self. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transferring DO schools to TouroCOM
I am waiting to hear back from 2 schools but only got into ICOM. I have severe anxiety & depression & I am from New Jersey very close to New York City. I was hoping to get into a New York or New Jersey school, but I didn’t get an interview. What are the odds I can transfer to touro COM or PCOM? I saw touro allows transfers after 1 year and I also noticed you need more than a 2.5 GPA. When I called them they said they don’t get many transfer applicants and it all depends on whether they have... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC/School List Help: CA, 3.84, 519, ORM
Hey guys! Just got my MCAT score back today (ahhh) and made a preliminary school list. I'm disadvantaged (low income, two immigrant parents, dealt with mother's suicide attempt, worked multiple jobs in college to pay for father's medication) and want to emphasize this in my application. I know my list is kind of top heavy, but I don't mind writing more essays. Let me know your thoughts! Would love to hear some more OOS friendly schools that fit my stats cGPA and sGPA as calculated by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

SSRI's vs CBT vs Alternative Treatments
Is there any recent literature on the efficacy of these treatments for depression and/or anxiety? Is there a gold standard treatment (CBT had been described as such)? SciHub is down so, I cannot search studies and many I find are abstracts and dated. Some state SSRI's are no better than placebo, others say they work. From what I have read CBT does seem to have a better track record. - Saw it mentioned in a couple older threads but, what is the deal with Ketamine? Most of the... Interesting case: psychopathology that remits with rest?
Hopping over from the psychology forum, as y'all seem to have more clinical case discussions. Female patient in her 30s, seen in a PCMHI context, high-pressure professional job. Presented with depressive and anxious symptoms (much more on the depressive side, but with a lot of work-related anxiety--"pressure to work all the time, terrified of professional consequences of not working hard enough"), reported briefly taking an SNRI as a teenager for anxiety but stopping after "maybe 2-3... Confused about Lithium vs Depakote in Bipolar
My understanding is that both medications work better in acute mania than bipolar depression. However CANMAT seems to indicate good efficacy of both in bipolar depression. Though I've heard that VPA is better for mixed episodes. All things being equal how do you weigh starting Li vs VPA in a patient with no contraindications for either. Do you choose one over another based on presenting symptoms? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Graduated 2021 and applying 2023, but lost on what to do. Need some advice.
Hi everyone, I graduated from a prestigious UG in 2021. I had severe mental health issues (depression, anxiety) as a result of family having substance abuse problems for all of college and didn't perform at my best. I had to take care of them, strained relationship, etc. Thankfully I feel much better but I don't know where to start to get my application in order - I feel like I have so many holes right now. cGPA: 3.65, sGPA: 3.6 MCAT: Haven't taken yet.. but can likely get 520+ (I have...
