HELP!! C- or W
Please help, I’m feeling very conflicted. I’m currently in orgo 2 facing what probably will be a c at the highest and very likely lower. I have two exams left, but nothing to indicate they are going to go any better than the first. I’m in my second year and have done well on my other classes. I’ve got A’s in everything except gen Chem 2 and a bio class (both were B’s). I am a very focused student, but after losing my mom last semester on top of the general covid depression I have found it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Disclosing mental health issues during pre-employment health screen
I just matched and recently got information from my new program about the onboarding process. The hospital requires that all employees complete a health evaluation which includes providing info about your past medical history. It says that if you have a current condition like depression or anxiety, you have to essentially provide documentation from your doctor that it’s under control. I’m on SSRIs for GAD, but I’m a hesitant to list this on here. I guess my question is, are there any... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Austin Pediatrician Dr. Dodson & Under-Desk Holsters Revisited
A Pediatrician With Terminal Cancer Killed Another Pediatrician And Himself During A Hostage Situation Bharat Narumanchi died by suicide after fatally shooting a beloved Austin pediatrician, Katherine Lindley Dodson, during a hostage situation at a children's medical center. www.buzzfeednews.com This story has been blowing up my social media. Dr. Dodson worked with one of my friends from med school at that clinic. I took a lot of flack on here a while back for suggesting that pain docs explore self-defense options in the clinic. Some of us do...

Placement of medically complicated patients who need need admission
What do you do with CL patients who meet involuntary psych admission criteria, but can't go to inpatient because of subacute medical issues or O2 tubing? For example, a patient on 24hr O2 s/p suicide attempt (no O2 tubing allowed on our unit). Or a patient with late stage cancer with FTT who needs subacute rehab placement, but is actively suicidal. Do you d/c to rehab with a 1:1 and make sure they have psych followup there? Do you just keep them on the medical floor in the hospital for CL... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I ’m lost
I’m a 3rd year medical student. After considering nearly every specialty I feel the greatest calling to psychiatry. I thought I wanted to do surgery or a specialty with procedures but through my rotations I’m finding that once the novelty and excitement of the surgery/procedure wears off it becomes more like drudgery. I find myself drawn to patients with depression/anxiety/mental illness etc. I’m interested in their stories and why they feel the way they do. I feel a strong urge to help... Virtual EMDR
I've noticed this has been getting advertised to me all over the place lately. Has anyone else come across this? Virtual EMDR Online therapy for PTSD, trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction. Effective self-guided program for use at home without a therapist. Free trial www.virtualemdr.com Some of the claims on their website seem wildly irresponsible to me. It seems like they haven't done any actual evaluation of the effectiveness of their virtual implementation of EMDR and are just ...

Depressed and taking the 1/15 MCAT with intend to void.
I've been delaying taking the MCAT since graduation when I was originally supposed to take in in September 2019, but wasn't scoring where I needed so i postponed to 2020. After having my exams cancelled a few times and pushing dates back I am now taking this exam Friday, but I am nowhere near ready and extremely depressed as of late. My home life has gotten a bit rougher from the pandemic and I've just been in a rut since graduation while taking post-bacc classes that has now reached a... "High functioning depression"?
Any thoughts on this concept? It's not an empirically based disorder but occasionally makes the rounds in popular media articles, where it basically means "depression but with very little to no functional impairment," The articles either try to describe it as mild MDD or as PDD (what used to be called dysthymic disorder). Some media examples: This Is What High-Functioning Depression Looks Like I'm a happy mom, wife, and professional. What you don't know is that I struggle with depression, too. ...

Mental Health and Clinical Responsibilities as a PhD Student
Current 2nd-year student in a clinical psych PhD program. Am considering whether to approach DCT with concerns about my own ability to see patients (let alone function as a grad student). Tl;dr: moderately-to-severely depressed, but haven't screwed anything up yet (except my health and personal life). Should I talk to the DCT? While I've had recurring moderate depression most of my life, I've been able to compensate well enough to get into a PhD program. However, I've decompensated very... In desperate need of advice as to how to go about my life and endeavors as someone interested in medicine.
Hi guys, I hope everyone and his/her loved ones are doing quite well during this New Year. I just wanted to seek some genuine advice as to how to move forward in the situation I am in. I will try to be succinct as possible. I started my college career at a state flagship pretty well with a 4.0 GPA. After sophomore year, I started tanking in academic performance due to a host of reasons such as clinical depression and BDD (Body Dysmorphia Disorder). The worst was yet to come. In the spring... Early practice update
Hello all, update post. I think I have simultaneously the cushiest and most stressful outpatient job in the city. I have 30 minute appointments and 90 minute intakes, 35 hours a week and no call, and I think I'm making more than anyone else does for comparable work in this geographic area. That said, a good chunk is hazard pay. In my short tenure so far, I've referred multiple people to the ER for both psych and non-psych reasons, seen a death and a suicide attempt, generated police... Suicidal attempt patient. Am I at fault?
Please no troll comments Saw a younger patient in the psych ER. Male with no previous psych hx or admissions. Not on psych meds. Got in a fight with family and destroyed the house. Patient denied everything and implied everything was fine. Said the dispute was over money with his parents. Talked with family who said he’s been psychotic for a year. Pt denied SI. Scored low on Safe T assessment. No hx of SI attempts. Family said he made vague SI comments 1 month ago. Admitted pt but on Q15... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
