Suicide Malpractice Case [Naturopathic Provider and Allopathic Psychiatrist]
Sad case here: Suicide [Naturopathic "Doctor"] Young woman with suicidal thoughts. Takes her husband's gun, holds it to her head. Tells family, they try to help her but she is resistant to hospitalization. Sees a naturopathic doctor, apparently there was no screening for suicidality. Dies by suicide several weeks later. Husband sues multiple providers (psychiatrist who had seen her months before, social worker, naturopathic doctor). Everyone eventually ends up settling. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do you need to be rural to do full scope family medicine?
Ok so apologies if I sound ignorant or anything because I'm just a premed applying next year, but anyways I've been doing a lot of research and it seems like full scope family medicine is the ideal specialty for me. The PCP I grew up with was a "referral machine" and honestly really ruined my vision of what a doctor was. She always seemed depressed, the slightest issue I had while growing up she'd refer to derm, pt, e.t.c, and the only thing she actually did for me that didn't require me... M1 struggling
I started M1 two months ago and had a good start. However, this past three weeks I have been feeling like I am slipping into a bout of depression/anxiety. I am having trouble focusing during lectures/self-study, and after having 8 hours of classes every day I have been feeling too exhausted at night to do any meaningful studying. I have trouble falling asleep so I get more exhausted day by day. I have stopped exercising. I don't have the social energy to talk with any classmates. I feel so... Brief Emotional-Behavioral Assessment 96127
My understanding is this can be submitted for reviewing and documenting results of the PHQ-9 and GAD-7. And submitted for each assessment. Even for the columbia suicide screen. Have others used this yet or learned anything about its documentation needs in order to submit? Low lying fruit, but I do like to get paid for the work I do. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

After 20 years, predental students think twice before applying.
20 years ago, dentistry was booming and it was the highest paid profession at $220K. My tuition was $5k a year, so it was a no brainer. This is the only job that saw wages decreased in 20 years. Now the avg dental salary is around $180k. Now, schools are charging over $100k a year. This is financial suicide. If I have to decide today, I would absolutely would not go into dentistry. Dental insurance companies are killing us. Year after year they are cutting fees. It’s tough being... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Disheartening story about mental health stigma in medicine
TL;DR- Mom's department chose to hire a physician who sexually and physically assaults his colleagues over another physician who suffered from depression in the past Hey all, just thought I'd share this story my mom shared with me recently. Warning: If you do not want to be disheartened/want to read something positive then keep scrolling, this is not the thread for you. I'm not really sure why I'm sharing this; I think I'm just extremely tired and fed up with this... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Dual diagnosis patients
I’ve noticed time and again that patients with dual diagnosis or high risk substance use tell me that “if only I got my anxiety/depression/etc under control I would have no problem not using.” Which is an elaborate form of denial, and there are plenty of people with anxiety/depression etc who never even think to turn to substance use when they’re having trouble. (As an attending of mine in residency said, too, people do not drink because they have depression or anxiety but because they like... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

More buprenorphine stories
There seems to be a prevalence of people using or wanting to use buprenorphine more for chronic pain. Reasons PRO (some debatable): Less addictive Less prone to abuse Less euphoric Less tolerance Reverse tolerance Less respiratory depression (but same if on other respiratory depressants) Schedule 3 Doesn’t show up in popular music as far as I know. No buprenorphine pill mills (suboxone/ chain addiction centers are another story). Cons: Transition to buprenorphine from a schedule 2... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

NYC Residents Commit Suicide - Lincoln
NYC doctor suicides raise concerns about treatment of resident physicians at Bronx hospital Their deaths have rocked Lincoln, part of the city’s public Health+Hospitals network, and have raised questions about the rigors — and management — of the residency program there. www.nydailynews.com Hope they fire that PD and change the culture there. I’ve heard of malignant programs at that place, but NYC H+H needs to step up and do something, as should ACGME. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Considering dropping out
As the title says, I'm considering dropping out and could really use some advice. I'm currently on leave of absence from a US medical school. For some background information, I decided to take a leave after my first year because of a severe episode of depression. I won't go into specifics, but I was suicidal and decided I needed to take a step back from school, despite doing pretty well academically. During my leave, I started seeing a counselor and psychiatrist regularly and was able to get... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
