Palliative Care and Hospice Fellowship Programs
PGY3 Psychiatry Resident applying for fellowship in Palliative Care and Hospice Medicine this coming cycle. I have been doing my own research into programs looking at their websites, but find that first hand accounts from prior fellows is limited. Any personal experiences, good or bad with specific programs? Not a dealbreaker, but have a particular interest in more experimental treatments such as Ketamine, Psilocybin, or MDMA micro-dosing for depression and anxiety in the... Quit Lab Research---What to do now
Hello Everyone! Current pre-med here, though I am feeling a little lost in my own path right now. I recently picked up some research (as of 8 months ago) because I knew how valuable it is in Med School Admissions, and because I had also picked up some interest in it during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, I soon realized that I hated the type of research I was working on (which was basically microbiological research). I had started to feel a lot of depression during my time there and I kind... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Suicidal statements in a delirious patient
This situation keeps arising where I will have a patient on my program's CL service that, while delirious, will make a suicidal statement. What extra considerations do you take into account when the patient is delirious? Attendings on my service seem to discount these suicidal statements, but I sometimes I wonder if that would be like discounting an intoxicated patient's suicidal statement, which we generally take quite seriously. Just because there is a reversable factor that is causing... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Downtrend in GPA with a few semester Ws - is medical school still possible?
I have a downtrend in GPA with a final GPA of 3.4 in my undergrad. I tried to take a graduate course and failed miserably due to undiagnosed ADD. I took an MCAT in undergrad and scored a 492 because of the undiagnosed ADD. This whole time i have been going through ADD without knowing it and the doctors have been missing it this whole time and misdiagnosing it as depression and anxiety while putting me on drugs to treat those. I am yet to get on medication for it but think it will take... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Including adversity in PS just for the sake of it
So I have a somewhat significant life story. Without getting too personal, my direct family has battled with addiction, suicide, sexuality, and subsequent religious shunning. It definitely shaped me into a different person, and I will be able to care for my patients differently than if I had a more normal background. However, it really has nothing to do with why I want to go to medical school. My pre-med advisor suggests that I should include all of this into my PS. They think that I'll be... Terrible undergrad GPA, what are my chances?
I did terribly in undergraduate, was enrolled in one of those bs/dds accelerated program schools. The same old "excuse" per say but went through depression, domestic abuse, major anxiety, and was a diagnosed alcoholic. Graduated with 2.66 overall gpa and sub 2.5 sgpa. Went to therapy, got better and barely graduated. Took the DAT twice during undergrad both were sub 19AA. Applied to a masters program at Rutgers as a dental scholars track, it looks like I will be graduating with a 3.75 gpa... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

PLEASE DON’T QUOTE Hi friends, Long story short this is my second cycle and still couldn’t get into med schools I want to go to. First cycle I got 1 interview from my flagship state school. How can I make the most of my LOA/Research year?
I just finished preclinical without taking Step 1. I got into dedicated and pretty much fell apart. Barely below passing every practice exam and some suppressed feelings of depression and anxiety started to swell up. I decided to call it quits temporarily, rather than risk failing Step and royally screw myself over. My school and dean are supportive of me taking a year off, but that's about where the support ends. There is no official pathways towards funded research, no available MPH/MBA... Med Student Deaths
I am wondering how many of you have experienced a classmate of yours dying (either in your graduating class or a different one)? Did your school communicate with you how that classmate died (suicide, accident, illness, etc.) How many of you have experienced a classmate committing suicide? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Have an upcoming psych interview
Hey guys, Have a psychiatry interview coming up. Haven't done much psych (I am in Egypt and our system is different here we don't need to do a preliminary year to apply to psychiatry) I am preparing for a interview and wanted to discuss a few things if people didn't mind helping - If you are in a situation where a 23year old person is expressing suicidal thoughts because they are legally an adult do you still engage with their parents or is it not allowed because the patient is an adult...
