Date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera): antioxidant potential and profile of free and bound polyphenols from different cultivars
In this study, the antioxidant activities and detailed phenolic profiling of extracts from seven cultivars of date seeds were investigated. Significant differences were detected among cultivars. Total phenolic content (TP) ranged between 135.9±12.1 and 284.86±21.9 mg GAE/g DM. The total flavonoid value varied between 34.20±0.34 and 94.46±1.04 mg RE/g DM. The condensed tannin ranged from 24.17±1.13 to 201.60±9.95 mg CTE/g DM. Phloroglucinolysis was used to depolymerize the bound polyphenols. Results show the presence of phenolic acids: Hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, and a high amount of flavan-3ols (monome...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 4048: Exploitation of Sugarcane Bagasse and Environmentally Sustainable Production, Purification, Characterization, and Application of Lovastatin by Aspergillus terreus AUMC 15760 under Solid-State Conditions
. M. Al-Bedak Using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region for identification, three strains of Aspergillus terreus were identified and designated AUMC 15760, AUMC 15762, and AUMC 15763 for the Assiut University Mycological Centre culture collection. The ability of the three strains to manufacture lovastatin in solid-state fermentation (SSF) using wheat bran was assessed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The most potent strain was strain AUMC 15760, which was chosen to ferment nine types of lignocellulosic waste (barley bran, bean hay, date palm leaves, flax seeds, orange peels, rice straw, soy ...

Potentials of mono- and multi-metal ion removal from water with cotton stalks and date palm stone residuals
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 May 1. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-27137-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, cotton stalks (Gossypium barbadense) and date palm stones (Phoenix dactylifera) have been used as biosorbents to remove cadmium; Cd(II), lead; Pb(II), and zinc; Zn(II) from mono- and multi-solutions. Each biosorbent was characterized using SEM-EDX, and FT-IR. The findings showed that pH, dose, contact time, metal concentration, and particle size affect the treatment process. The adsorption pattern was Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Zn(II) for both biosorbents. The adsorption performance of cotton stalks was higher ...

Human Exposure to Bats, Rodents and Monkeys in Bangladesh
AbstractBats, rodents and monkeys are reservoirs for emerging zoonotic infections. We sought to describe the frequency of human exposure to these animals and the seasonal and geographic variation of these exposures in Bangladesh. During 2013 –2016, we conducted a cross-sectional survey in a nationally representative sample of 10,002 households from 1001 randomly selected communities. We interviewed household members about exposures to bats, rodents and monkeys, including a key human–bat interface–raw date palm sap consumption. Res pondents reported observing rodents (90%), bats (52%) and monkeys (2%) in or around the...

Characterization and antibacterial activity of raw cotton fabrics treated with date seed extract and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)
This study aimed to be contingent upon the characterisation of raw cotton fabrics treated by AgNPs with date seed extract (DSE) of P. dactylifera both individually and in combination and to investigate their antibacterial activity against various human pathogens. The prepared cotton materials with the synthesized AgNPs and/or DSE were described by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). At the same time, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were employed to determine the bioactive components in the aqueous date seed extract. The greater ...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 907: TPD1-like Gene as a Suitable Marker for Early Sex Determination in Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.)
nain Khan Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a considerably beneficial and economically profitable fruit crop. Female date palm plants produce fruit that is rich in fiber and sugar. Date palm is propagated by two means: suckers and seed. The propagation of date palm through seeds is very necessary for germplasm conservation and breeding. The late reproductive age (4–5 years) and dioecious nature of date palm make genetic improvement and breeding difficult. Early sex determination is the only way to improve breeding by selecting experimental male and female plants at the seedling stage. The primers for ...

Detection of adaptive genetic diversity and chemical composition in date palm cultivars and their implications in controlling red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliver
This study, about RPW and date palms, is under the scope of date palm bioecology and nutrition (nutritional ecology) which includes the integration of several areas of research such as date palm biochemistry, genetics, and RPW infestation behavior through various date palm cultivars. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.; Arecaceae) production is under threat from the red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliver. A better understanding of genetic diversity within date palm cultivars can be useful for its implementation within the insect IPM program in the future. Three indices, namely simple-sequence repeats (SSR) m...
