An assessment of ozone risk for date palm suggests that phytotoxic ozone dose nonlinearly affects carbon gain
This study estimated leaf- and plant-level photosynthetic CO2 uptake for understanding how elevated levels of O3 affects date palm biomass growth. Ozone risks to date palm plants were assessed based on exposure- (AOT40) or flux-based indices (Phytotoxic Ozone Dose, PODy, where y is a threshold of uptake). For this purpose, plants were exposed to three levels of O3 [ambient air, AA (45 ppb as daily average); 1.5 × AA; 2.0 × AA] for 92 days in an O3 Free-Air Controlled Exposure facility. According to the model simulations, the negative effects of O3 on plant-level net photosynthetic CO2 uptake were attributed to reduced gr...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 7885: The Covalent Linking of Organophosphorus Heterocycles to Date Palm Wood-Derived Lignin: Hunting for New Materials with Flame-Retardant Potential
In this study, four novel modified lignins were prepared, and their char-forming abilities were assessed using thermogravimetric analysis. The lignin was obtained from date palm wood using a butanosolv pretreatment. The removal of the majority of the ester groups from this heavily acylated lignin was achieved via alkaline hydrolysis. The subsequent modification of the lignin involved the incorporation of an azide functional group and copper-catalysed azide–alkyne cycloaddition reactions. These reactions enabled novel organophosphorus heterocycles to be linked to the lignin. Our preliminary results suggest tha...

Cationic and anionic detergent buffers in sequence yield high-quality genomic DNA from diverse plant species
We describe a reliable, and consistent protocol suitable for the extraction of DNA from 42 difficult-to-extract plant species belonging to 33 angiosperm (monocot and dicot) families, including tissues such as seeds, roots, endosperm, and flower/fruit tissues. The protocol was first optimized for the outbreeding recalcitrant trees viz., Prosopis cineraria, Conocarpus erectus, and Phoenix dactylifera, which are rich in proteins, polysaccharides, and secondary metabolites, and the quality of the extracted DNA was confirmed by downstream applications. Nine procedures were attempted to extract high-quality, impurities-free DNA ...
