Can ancient irrigation canals water thirsty crops in Morocco today?
This article was reported before the devastating earthquake in Morocco on 8 September. It isn’t yet known how the earthquake affected the underground tunnels described here. Underground tunnels, or khettara , have been shuttling water through Morocco’s harsh landscapes for millennia , allowing communities such as the Aït Ouarhou tribe to settle in the Anti-Atlas Mountains where rains are scarce for much of the year. The tribe depends on groundwater-fed khettara to harvest almonds, olives, and other crops. “The people in my tribe need the khettara to bring us wat...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 7081: TinyML-Sensor for Shelf Life Estimation of Fresh Date Fruits
hrani Fresh dates have a limited shelf life and are susceptible to spoilage, which can lead to economic losses for producers and suppliers. The problem of accurate shelf life estimation for fresh dates is essential for various stakeholders involved in the production, supply, and consumption of dates. Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is one of the essential methods that improves the quality and increases the shelf life of fresh dates by reducing the rate of ripening. Therefore, this study aims to apply fast and cost-effective non-destructive techniques based on machine learning (ML) to predict and estimate the shelf ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5807: A Sustainable Approach for the Valorization of Underutilized Date Fruits
nez-Araujo Secondary varieties of date fruits are often discarded because they do not have commercial value. However, their phytochemicals are very similar to those of the primary ones and therefore, they can be valorized as a source of compounds of interest, mainly phenols and dietary fiber. Their chemical composition changes with ripening, so their characterization throughout this process is of great significance. Date fruit samples were harvested at Khalal, Rutab, and Tamer stages, and a mixture of fruits from ornamental date trees was also analyzed. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts were studied for their phenolic com...

High-Lignin-Containing Cellulose Nanofibrils from Date Palm Waste Produced by Hydrothermal Treatment in the Presence of Maleic Acid
Biomacromolecules. 2023 Jul 31. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c00515. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) have attracted great attention because the presence of lignin brought additional merits to cellulose nanofibrils including hydrophobicity, ultraviolet (UV)-shielding capacity, and reduced water sensitivity. In the present work, LCNFs with lignin content up to 21 wt % were prepared with a high yield exceeding 70 wt %, from neat date palm waste, by a hydrothermal treatment (HTT) at 120-150 °C in the presence of 20-30 wt % maleic acid, followed by high-pressure homogenization. The che...

Henipavirus zoonosis: outbreaks, animal hosts and potential new emergence
Hendra virus (HeV) and Nipah virus (NiV) are biosafety level 4 zoonotic pathogens causing severe and often fatal neurological and respiratory disease. These agents have been recognized by the World Health Organization as top priority pathogens expected to result in severe future outbreaks. HeV has caused sporadic infections in horses and a small number of human cases in Australia since 1994. The NiV Malaysia genotype (NiV-M) was responsible for the 1998–1999 epizootic outbreak in pigs with spillover to humans in Malaysia and Singapore. Since 2001, the NiV Bangladesh genotype (NiV-B) has been the predominant strain leadin...

Indigenously produced biochar retains fertility in sandy soil through unique microbial diversity sustenance: a step toward the circular economy
This study investigates the microbial community in the arid soil of Dubai under shade house conditions irrigated with saline water and the shift in the microbial community, following 1 year of amendment with indigenously prepared biochar from date palm waste.MethodsAmplicon sequencing was used to elucidate changes in bacterial, archaeal, and fungal community structures in response to long-term biochar amendment. Samples were collected from quinoa fields receiving standard NPK doses and from fields receiving 20 and 30 tons ha−1 of biochar, in addition to NPK for 1 year. Water holding capacity, pH, electrical conductivity,...

Electrochemical detection of ornidazole in commercial milk and water samples using an electrode based on green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using cellulose separated from Phoenix dactylifera seed
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 May 24:124995. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.124995. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe widespread use of antibiotics has contributed to the control of disease and the nutritional well-being of livestock. Antibiotics reach the environment via excretions (urine and feces) from human and domestic animals, through non proper disposal or handling of unused drugs. The present study describes a green method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) using cellulose extracted from Phoenix dactylifera seed powder via mechanical stirrer method for the electroanalytical determination of ornidazole (ODZ)...

Enhanced osteogenesis on proantocyanidin-loaded date palm endocarp cellulosic matrices: A novel sustainable approach for guided bone regeneration
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 May 13:124857. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.124857. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDeveloping inexpensive, biocompatible natural scaffolds that can support the differentiation and proliferation of stem cells has been recently emphasized by the research community to faster obtain the FDA approvals for regenerative medicine. In this regard, plant-derived cellulose materials are a novel class of sustainable scaffolding materials with high potentials for bone tissue engineering (BTE). However, low bioactivity of the plant-derived cellulose scaffolds restricts cell proliferation and cell differentiation...

Date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera): antioxidant potential and profile of free and bound polyphenols from  different cultivars
In this study, the antioxidant activities and detailed phenolic profiling of extracts from seven cultivars of date seeds were investigated. Significant differences were detected among cultivars. Total phenolic content (TP) ranged between 135.9±12.1 and 284.86±21.9 mg GAE/g DM. The total flavonoid value varied between 34.20±0.34 and 94.46±1.04 mg RE/g DM. The condensed tannin ranged from 24.17±1.13 to 201.60±9.95 mg CTE/g DM. Phloroglucinolysis was used to depolymerize the bound polyphenols. Results show the presence of phenolic acids: Hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, and a high amount of flavan-3ols (monome...
