Cushing's Syndrome is associated with Gut Microbial Dysbiosis and Cortisol-Degrading Bacteria
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of gut microbial dysbiosis in patients with CS and identifies a group of CS-enriched bacteria capable of degrading cortisol. These findings highlight the potential role of gut microbiota in regulating host steroid hormone levels, and consequently host health.PMID:38157274 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad766 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

High prevalence of venous thrombotic events in Cushing's syndrome: data from ERCUSYN and details in relation to surgery
CONCLUSION: Patients with CS have elevated risk of developing VTE for an extended period of time. From ERCUSYN cohort patients have higher risk for VTE if they need multiple surgeries to treat CS, are males and have high UFC values at the diagnosis of CS.Since there is no agreement on thromboprohpylaxis, a protocol for VTE prevention which is widely adopted appears to be necessary in patients with CS.PMID:38146835 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad176 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Epigenetic alterations of 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 gene in the adipose tissue of patients with primary aldosteronism
We examined the mRNA level and methylation status of the HSD11B1 promoter region in the adipose tissue of patients with primary aldosteronism (PA). We compared 10 tissue specimens from patients with PA caused by aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) with 8 adipose tissue specimens from patients with subclinical Cushing's syndrome (SCS) caused by cortisol-producing adenomas, 4 tissue specimens from patients with Cushing's adenoma (Cu), or 7 tissue specimens from patients with non-functioning adrenal adenoma (NFA). PA, SCS, and Cu were diagnosed according to the guideline of the Japan Endocrine Society. The mRNA level of HSD11...

A clinical perspective on ectopic Cushing's syndrome
Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2023 Dec 23:S1043-2760(23)00248-5. doi: 10.1016/j.tem.2023.12.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCushing's syndrome (CS) refers to the clinical features of prolonged pathological glucocorticoid excess. About 10-20% of individuals with CS have ectopic CS (ECS), that is, an adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)-producing tumour outside the pituitary gland. ACTH-secreting neuroendocrine neoplasia (NENs) can arise from many organs, although bronchial NEN, small cell lung cancer (SCLC), pancreatic NEN, thymic NEN, medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), and pheochromocytoma are the most common. Patients with ECS frequentl...
