Persistent increased severity of cannabis use disorder symptoms in adolescents compared to adults: a one-year longitudinal study
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1007/s00406-024-01806-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdolescence is a developmental period characterised by increased vulnerability to cannabis use disorder (CUD). However, previous investigations of this vulnerability have relied on cross-sectional comparisons and lack a detailed assessment of cannabis quantity, a potentially important confounding factor. Here, we aimed to investigate the one-year course of CUD in adolescents compared to adults who currently use cannabis, adjusting for a comprehensive measure of cannabis quantity. Data are from a one-year observatio...

Transfected SARS-CoV-2 spike DNA for mammalian cell expression inhibits p53 activation of p21(WAF1), TRAIL Death Receptor DR5 and MDM2 proteins in cancer cells and increases cancer cell viability after chemotherapy exposure
We examined the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 spike, p53 and MDM2 (E3 ligase, which mediates p53 degradation) in cancer cells using an immunoprecipitation assay. We observed that SARS-CoV-2 spike protein interrupts p53-MDM2 protein interaction but did not detect SARS-CoV-2 spike bound with p53 protein in the cancer cells. We further observed that SARS-CoV-2 spike suppresses p53 transcriptional activity in cancer cells including after nutlin exposure of wild-type p53-, spike-expressing tumor cells and inhibits chemotherapy-induced p53 gene activation of p21(WAF1), TRAIL Death Receptor DR5 and MDM2. The suppressive effect o...

SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell responses: a comparative analysis between QuantiFERON SARS-CoV-2, T-SPOT.COVID, and an in-house Omicron ELISpot
CONCLUSION: The evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 T cell immunity using commercially accessible assays may yield disparate outcomes as results from different assays are not directly comparable. A specific Omicron ELISpot should be considered to assess Omicron-specific T cell immunity.PMID:38710307 | DOI:10.1016/j.jviromet.2024.114949 (Source: Journal of Virological Methods)

A stochastic scale conjugate neural network procedure for the SIRC epidemic delay differential system
In this study, a stochastic computing structure is provided for the numerical solutions of the SIRC epidemic delay differential model, i.e. SIRC-EDDM using the dynamics of the COVID-19. The design of the scale conjugate gradient (CG) neural networks (SCGNNs) is presented for the numerical treatment of SIRC-EDDM. The mathematical model is divided into susceptible S(ρ), recovered R(ρ), infected I(ρ), and cross-immune C(ρ), while the numerical performances have been provided into three different cases. The exactitude of the SCGNNs is perceived through the comparison of the accomplished and reference outcomes (Runge-Kutta ...

Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic: The importance of physician leadership in responding to rural community ecosystem disruptions
CONCLUSION: Healthcare policy and practice transformation should prioritise developing opportunities to strengthen physician leadership, particularly in rural areas that will be adversely affected by ecosystem disruption.INTRODUCTION: La pandémie de COVID-19 a représenté un défi sans précédent pour les médecins de famille en milieu rural. Les leçons tirées au cours des deux années écoulées peuvent aider à orienter les réponses aux futures perturbations de l'écosystème. Cette étude qualitative vise à explorer les expériences de leadership des médecins de famille ruraux canadiens pendant la pandémie de C...

Behind the scenes: facilitators and barriers to developing state scarce resource allocation plans for the COVID-19 pandemic
Chest. 2024 May 4:S0012-3692(24)00541-5. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2024.04.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: In response to COVID-19, many states revised, developed, or attempted to develop plans to allocate scarce critical care resources in the event crisis standards of care were triggered. No prior analysis has assessed this plan development process, including whether plans were successfully adopted.RESEARCH QUESTION: How did states develop or revise scarce resource allocation plans during the COVID-19 pandemic and what were the barriers and facilitators to their development and adoption at the state level?STUDY ...

Poland's first vascular access team 3-year analysis: Insights and learnings
CONCLUSIONS: The introduction of MCs as a possible option for peripheral venous access reduces the use of CVCs. Developing MCs programmes should be based on investing in staff competencies, which increases success rates. The nurses and physicians should be trained in infusion care to achieve better results in the use of MCs and LPCs. Increasing the competence of nurses in Poland is necessary for the implementation of full-service and top-level functioning of VAT.PMID:38708844 | DOI:10.1177/11297298241251502 (Source: The Journal of Vascular Access)

The Best Predictor of Future Behavior May Be the Past: Exploring Behavior Change in Men Who Have Sex with Men Using Pre-exposure Prophylaxis in the Netherlands
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1007/s10508-024-02863-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use prevents HIV transmission, and may lead to changes in sexual behavior. We aimed to explore sexual behavior over time, and identify predictors of behavior change in men who have sex with men (MSM) using PrEP at sexual health centers (SHC) in the Netherlands. We used longitudinal data from the national STI surveillance database (January 2018-June 2021) of HIV-negative MSM who first initiated PrEP in the national PrEP pilot. We modelled behavior change after PrEP initiation, and identified predictors ...

Science of psychological phenomena and their testing
Am Psychol. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1037/amp0001362. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is no crisis of replication and generalizability in psychological science, only misunderstanding or forgetting the fundamental nature of psychological phenomena and resultant implications for empirical testing. Stability-variability is the central feature of every psychological phenomenon, meaning that brain-mind interactions can only create stable patterns from which there will always be deviations. Psychological phenomena are not comparable to COVID-19 vaccines that were very effective (95%) initially for almost everyone for a long time....

Self-management challenges of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Ekurhuleni district primary health care facilities amid COVID-19 lockdown
CONCLUSION: The patients with T2DM experienced uncontrolled blood glucose levels and financial challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown. Guidelines to improve self-management programmes during restrictions are needed to promote good health during future pandemics to prevent complications and mortality. The telehealth model can be designed to monitor chronic patients at home during lockdown as a two-way communication.Contribution: More knowledge and insight into self-management and health promotion of patients with T2DM was provided by this study. Increased training needs arose for PHC nurses in managing and monitoring pati...

Determination of COVID-19 Late Disorders as Possible Long-COVID and/or Vaccination Consequences
This study included the vaccinated individuals of 4 different vaccine regimens including inactivated virus-based, subunit protein, and adenovirus-based vaccines in a follow-up schedule 6-month post the booster shot. All the documented vaccine adverse events were thoroughly assessed considering the cases' medical history by Adverse Events Committee of Pasteur Institute of Iran. Totally 329 individuals who got 3 doses of vaccination were followed 6 months after the booster shots among whom 41 (12.4%) cases with the mean age of 40.9 ± 10.48 years had a type of disorder. Gynecological and osteoarticular involvements were the ...
