United States marijuana legalization and opioid mortality trends before and during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: During the past decade, marijuana legalization in the US was associated at the jurisdiction level with a greater acceleration in opioid death rate. An even greater increase in opioid mortality occurred in recreational-legalizing jurisdictions with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Marijuana legalization is correlated with worsening of the US opioid epidemic.PMID:38700393 | DOI:10.5055/jom.0829 (Source: Journal of Opioid Management)

Increased Pill Burden and Adverse Effects of Psychotropics Correlated with Poor Quality of Life and Medication Nonadherence: A Cross-sectional Drug Utilization Study at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Delhi during COVID-19 Pandemic
CONCLUSION: In the tertiary care hospital described, rational drug prescribing was followed. Increase in the number of drugs per prescription was found to be associated with poor QOL and the development of ADRs led to medication nonadherence in the patients. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these results. How to cite this article: Kumar A, Halder S, Srivastava S, et al. Humoral Response After Two Doses of COVISHIELD < sup > TM < /sup > Vaccine in Patients Undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis
CONCLUSION: In MHD patients, two doses of the COVISHIELDTM vaccine induced a substantial humoral response. Prior history of COVID-19 resulted in a higher antibody response. Thus, the COVISHIELDTM vaccine is efficacious and safe for use in patients with MHD. How to cite this article: Balwani MR, Pasari AS, Baw.ule C, et al. Glycemic Control and Mucormycosis during COVID-19 Pandemic in India a Study of Stage and Outcome
CONCLUSION: The study showed a positive correlation between the stage of mucormycosis and serum glycemic control markers at presentation. Clinicians must order blood sugar and HbA1c levels at presentation as cues for a better understanding of disease severity. A thorough clinical examination and history taking for patient risk factors predisposing to mucormycosis are also crucial since the presence of proptosis and coronary artery disease are significantly correlated with the mortality outcomes. The extent of poor glycemic control at presentation was not associated with mortality outcomes. How to cite this article: Sharma ...

Comparison of Guillain-Barre Syndrome Cases during and Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Multicentric Study
DISCUSSION: The number of GBS hospital admissions, clinical presentation, electrodiagnostic features, and short-term outcomes did not differ significantly between the prepandemic and postpandemic periods; a slightly higher incidence of in-hospital complications was observed during the pandemic period. Long COVID-19: A Systematic Review
J Assoc Physicians India. 2023 Sep;71(9):82-94. doi: 10.59556/japi.71.0337.ABSTRACTCoronavirus disease 2019's (COVID-19's) wide dissemination casts long-term health jeopardy for millions. Long COVID-19, a lingering multisystem malady, weaves a complex array of symptoms. Understanding its full impact requires extensive research over months or years. The pace of recovery remains uncertain, challenging healthcare systems. An evidence-based symphony of medical care and support is urgently needed for long haulers. Understanding long COVID's genesis and advocating for patients is vital. Our comprehension remains limited, prompti...

Germicidal lamps using UV-C radiation may pose health safety issues: a biomolecular analysis of their effects on apoptosis and senescence
Aging (Albany NY). 2024 May 2;16. doi: 10.18632/aging.205787. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe battle against the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred a heightened state of vigilance in global healthcare, leading to the proliferation of diverse sanitization methods. Among these approaches, germicidal lamps utilizing ultraviolet (UV) rays, particularly UV-C (wavelength ranging from 280 to 100 nm), have gained prominence for domestic use. These light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are designed to sanitize the air, objects, and surfaces. However, the prevailing concern is that these UV lamps are often introduced into the market without...

The End of the Beginning? Temporality and Bioagency in Pandemic Research
J Hist Med Allied Sci. 2024 May 3:jrae006. doi: 10.1093/jhmas/jrae006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper deals with the ways in which the intellectual and political history of AIDS can assist in the chronological conceptualization of a pandemic such as COVID-19 as it is unfolding. It problematizes the idea of pandemic "beginnings" and "ends" to show that such definitions are shaped by the disciplinary location and thematic foci of relevant scholars. Central to this analysis is the notion that ethical and political contexts affect research on a pandemic in different ways at national and global levels at various point...

Surgical capacity is disaster preparedness: A scoping review of how surgery and anesthesiology departments responded to COVID-19
CONCLUSION: Our review reflects the mechanisms by which hospital surgical systems responded to the initial stress of the COVID-19 pandemic and reinforced the many changes to hospital policy that occurred in the pandemic. Healthcare systems with robust surgical systems were better able to cope with the initial stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. The well-resourced health systems of HICs reported rapid and dynamic changes by providers to assist in and ultimately improve the care of patients during the pandemic. Surgical system strengthening will allow health systems to be more resilient and prepared for the next disaster.PMID:3...

COVID-19 Vaccine Information and Infertility Posts on X: Insights on a Misinformation Pandemic
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine and fertility is highly prevalent on X and threatens vaccine uptake in patients desiring future fertility. Accounts sharing factual information were likely to have more followers and be verified; therefore, verifying more physicians sharing accurate information is critical.PMID:38698715 | DOI:10.7812/TPP/23.142 (Source: The Permanente journal)
