Environmental Implications and Nanotechnological Advances in Octocrylene-Enriched Sunscreen Formulations: A Comprehensive Review
Chemosphere. 2024 May 3:142235. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142235. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUltraviolet (UV) radiation is a major contributor to skin aging, cancer, and other detrimental health effects. Sunscreens containing FDA-approved UV filters, like avobenzone, offer protection but suffer from photodegradation and potential phototoxicity. Encapsulation, antioxidants, and photostabilizers are strategies employed to combat these drawbacks. Octocrylene, an organic UV filter, utilizes nanotechnology to enhance sun protection factor (SPF). This review examines recent literature on octocrylene-enriched sunscreens,...

Co-Occurrence of Apathy and Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson Disease: Variation across Multiple Measures
CONCLUSIONS: We observed a co-occurrence of apathy and ICDs in PD patients with each apathy instrument; however, limited concurrent validity exists across measures. This is important for future investigations into shared pathophysiology and the design of future clinical trials aimed at improving the early detection and treatment of these debilitating syndromes.PMID:38704737 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acae036 (Source: Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology)

Microbiome dynamics in immune checkpoint blockade
Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2024 May 4:S1043-2760(24)00096-1. doi: 10.1016/j.tem.2024.04.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmune checkpoint blockade (ICB) is one of the leading immunotherapies, although a variable extent of resistance has been observed among patients and across cancer types. Among the efforts underway to overcome this challenge, the microbiome has emerged as a factor affecting the responsiveness and efficacy of ICB. Active research, facilitated by advances in sequencing techniques, is assessing the predominant influence of the intestinal microbiome, as well as the effects of the presence of an intratumoral ...

Is it possible to treat melanoma by intercepting the CXCR4/CXCL12 pathway?
We present an overview of the CXCR4/CXCL12 axis in cancer progression and explain its role in the melanoma microenvironment in this paper. Furthermore, we investigate CXCR4's predictive usefulness as a possible biomarker for monitoring melanoma progression. Finally, we discuss the most recent research and clinical trials on CXCR4 inhibitors, emphasizing their efficacy and limits. We hope to improve the quality of life for melanoma patients by better understanding the role of CXCR4 and investigating novel therapeutic options.PMID:38704961 | DOI:10.1016/j.cyto.2024.156629 (Source: Cytokine)

Circulating miRNA and circulating tumor DNA application as liquid biopsy markers in gastric cancer
Clin Biochem. 2024 May 3:110767. doi: 10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2024.110767. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiquid biopsy has been investigated as a novel method to overcome the numerous challenges in gastric cancer (GC) management. This non-invasive, feasible, and easy-to-repeat method has been shown to be cost-effective and capable of increasing diagnostic sensitivity and prognostic assessment. Additionally, it is potentially accurate to aid decision-making and personalized treatment planning. MicroRNA (miRNA) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) markers can enhance GC management in various aspects, including diagnosis (mainly e...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1779: Opaganib Downregulates N-Myc Expression and Suppresses In Vitro and In Vivo Growth of Neuroblastoma Cells
D. Smith Neuroblastoma (NB), the most common cancer in infants and the most common solid tumor outside the brain in children, grows aggressively and responds poorly to current therapies. We have identified a new drug (opaganib, also known as ABC294640) that modulates sphingolipid metabolism by inhibiting the synthesis of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) by sphingosine kinase-2 and elevating dihydroceramides by inhibition of dihydroceramide desaturase. The present studies sought to determine the potential therapeutic activity of opaganib in cell culture and xenograft models of NB. Cytotoxicity assays demonstrated that NB ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1780: How Immunotherapy Has Redefined the Treatment Paradigm of Metastatic or Locally Advanced Muscle-Invasive Urothelial Bladder Carcinoma
oss-Goupil In the past decade, the therapeutic arsenal for metastatic bladder cancer has expanded considerably, with the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), antibody–drug conjugates such as enfortumab vedotin, and anti-fibroblast growth factor receptor agents. Clinical trials evaluating ICIs as neoadjuvants, adjuvants, or first- or second-line treatments have produced conflicting results. However, first-line therapeutic strategies have been redefined by the recent publication of results from two clinical trials: CheckMate-901, which demonstrated the superiority of combined treatment with n...

Unearthing naturally-occurring cyclic antibacterial peptides and their structural optimization strategies
We present here a detail review on the novel naturally-occurring CABPs discovered in the past decade and some of them are under clinical trials, exhibiting anticipated application potential. According to their chemical structures, they were broadly classified into five groups, including (i) lactam/lactone-based CABPs, (ii) cyclic lipopeptides, (iii) glycopeptides, (iv) cyclic sulfur-rich peptides and (v) multiple-modified CABPs. Their chemical structures, antibacterial spectrums and proposed mechanisms are discussed. Moreover, engineered analogs of these novel CABPs are also summarized to preliminarily analyze their struct...
