Effectiveness of autologous fibrin glue in preventing post-thoracotomy air leaks: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: The application of autologous fibrin glue during thoracotomy procedures significantly reduces postoperative air leaks and hospitalization duration without increasing complication rates. This finding suggests a beneficial role of fibrin glue in thoracic procedures requiring lung resection or decortication.PMID:38693984 | PMC:PMC11059015 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138579 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Population impacts of conditional financial incentives and a male-targeted digital decision support application on the HIV treatment cascade in rural KwaZulu Natal: findings from the HITS cluster randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Small CFIs can contribute to achieve the first step of the HIV care cascade. However, neither CFIs nor EPIC-HIV was sufficient to increase the number of people on ART. Additional evidence is needed to confirm the impact of EPIC-HIV on viral suppression.PMID:38695099 | PMC:PMC11063775 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26248 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Theoretically Based Factors Associated With Stroke Family Caregiver Health
The objective of this study is to determine theoretically based factors associated with unhealthy days in stroke family caregivers.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted using baseline data from a large randomized controlled clinical trial testing the Telephone Assessment and Skill-Building Kit program with 254 family caregivers of persons who have had strokes. Guided by a conceptual model derived from Lazarus' transactional approach to stress, data were analyzed using multiple regression with unhealthy days as the dependent variable and theoretically based factors as independent variables.RESUL...

Acupuncture for pediatric chronic pain: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: The analyzed studies showed important clinical results such as the reduction of pain intensity, and improvement in school attendance and social life. However, there are many limitations in study design and sample size. Therefore, there is weak evidence to support the use of acupuncture in the context of pediatric chronic pain, but the positive results reinforce the need for further investigation of the topic with the conduct of larger and well-designed studies, to obtain more data and greater scientific conviction of the findings.PMID:38697213 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2024.03.013 (Source: Jornal de Pediatria)

Antibacterial potential of < em > Euphorbia canariensis < /em > against < em > Pseudomonas aeruginosa < /em > bacteria causing respiratory tract infections
Artif Cells Nanomed Biotechnol. 2024 Dec;52(1):261-269. doi: 10.1080/21691401.2024.2345891. Epub 2024 May 2.ABSTRACTThe widespread dissemination of bacterial resistance has led to great attention being paid to finding substitutes for traditionally used antibiotics. Plants are rich in various phytochemicals that could be used as antibacterial therapies. Here, we elucidate the phytochemical profile of Euphorbia canariensis ethanol extract (EMEE) and then elucidate the antibacterial potential of ECEE against Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates. ECEE showed minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 128 to 512 µg/mL....

Steatotic Liver Disease: Pathophysiology and Emerging Pharmacotherapies
Pharmacol Rev. 2024 May 2;76(3):454-499. doi: 10.1124/pharmrev.123.001087.ABSTRACTSteatotic liver disease (SLD) displays a dynamic and complex disease phenotype. Consequently, the metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)/metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) therapeutic pipeline is expanding rapidly and in multiple directions. In parallel, noninvasive tools for diagnosing and monitoring responses to therapeutic interventions are being studied, and clinically feasible findings are being explored as primary outcomes in interventional trials. The realization that distinct subgroups ex...

MDM2 Inhibitors for Cancer Therapy: The Past, Present, and Future
In conclusion, targeting MDM2 remains a promising treatment approach, and targeting MDM2 for protein degradation represents a novel strategy to downregulate MDM2 without the side effects of the existing agents blocking p53-MDM2 binding. Additional preclinical and clinical investigations are needed to finally realize the full potential of MDM2 inhibition in treating cancer and other chronic diseases where MDM2 has been implicated. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Overexpression/amplification of the MDM2 oncogene has been detected in various human cancers and is associated with disease progression, treatment resistance, and poor pati...
