Effect of ciprofloxacin on the one-stage partial nitrification and anammox biofilm system: A multivariate analysis focusing on size-fractionated organic components
Chemosphere. 2024 Mar 15:141731. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141731. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe impact of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in the partial nitrification and anammox biofilm system was investigated by multivariate analysis, focusing on size-fractionated organic components. The CIP dose of 10 μg/L did not inhibit the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency, even though the abundance of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) (i.e., qnrD, qnrB, qnrA, qnrS, and arcA) was elevated. However, a gradual higher CIP dosing up to 100 μg/L inhibited the TN removal efficiency, while the abundance of ARGs was still increased. Mo...

Integrating target-responsive microfluidic-based biosensing chip with smartphone for simultaneous quantification of multiple fluoroquinolones
In this study, the background-free properties of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), the high specificity of the target aptamer (Apt), and the high quenching properties of graphene oxide (GO) were integrated into a microfluidic-based fluorescence biosensing chip (MFBC). Interestingly, the microfluidic channels of the MFBC were prepared by laser-printing technology without the need for complex preparation processes and additional specialized equipment. The target-responsive fluorescence biosensing probes loaded on the MFBC were prepared by self-assembly of the UCNPs-Apt complex with GO based on π-π stacking interactions, ...

Exploring variations in recommended first ‐choice therapy for complicated urinary tract infections in males: Insights from outpatient settings across age, race, and ethnicity
ConclusionsNearly half of the patients included in this study did not receive recommended first-choice therapies; however, racial and ethnic disparities were not identified. Underutilization of recommended first-choice antibiotic therapy in complicated UTIs continues to be an area of focus for antimicrobial stewardship programs. Talanta. 2024 Mar 11;273:125897. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.125897. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 3D printed device covered with Zn/Co-ZIF-derived carbon allows the on-site extraction of fluoroquinolones (FQs) from wastewater, avoiding the sample transportation to the laboratory, and the subsequent elution, separation and determination using an on-line flow system based on sequential injection analysis (SIA) coupled to HPLC-FL. Several parameters that affect the extraction efficiency and desorption were optimized including the sorption phase immobilization technique on the 3D device, extraction time, pH effect, sample v...
