The Management of Gonorrhea in the Era of Emerging Antimicrobial Resistance: What Primary Care Clinicians Should Know
Med Clin North Am. 2024 Mar;108(2):279-296. doi: 10.1016/j.mcna.2023.08.015. Epub 2023 Sep 14.ABSTRACTGonorrhea rates continue to rise in the United States and Neisseria gonorrhoeae's propensity to develop resistance to all therapies used for treatment has complicated the management of gonorrhea. Ceftriaxone is the only remaining highly effective recommended regimen for gonococcal treatment and few new anti-gonococcal antimicrobials are being developed. The 2021 CDC STI Treatment Guidelines increased the dose of ceftriaxone to 500 mg (1 g if ≥ 150 kg) for uncomplicated infections. It is recommended that all clinicians sh...

The role of type VI secretion system genes in antibiotic resistance and virulence in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates
DiscussionThe above results suggest that T6SS plays an important role, participating in the antibiotic resistance of A. baumannii, especially in terms of intrinsic resistance. Meanwhile, tssM and tssD contribute to bacterial virulence to a greater degree, with tssM being associated with greater importance. (Source: Frontiers in cellular and infection microbiology)

Antibiotic Resistance Profile of < em > E. coli < /em > Isolates from Lettuce, Poultry Manure, Irrigation Water, and Soil in Kumasi, Ghana
Int J Microbiol. 2024 Jan 27;2024:6681311. doi: 10.1155/2024/6681311. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTInputs such as irrigation water and poultry manure used in lettuce cultivation have been found to be associated with antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The study assessed the antibiotic resistance profile of Escherichia coli isolated from lettuce, poultry manure, irrigation water, and soil in Kumasi. One hundred and fifty-six samples of lettuce, irrigation water, soil, and manure were collected from three farms over a seven-week cultivation period (seedlings to harvest stage). E. coli were enumerated using standard methods. 98% of t...

Ceftriaxone averts neuroinflammation and relieves depressive-like behaviors via GLT-1/TrkB signaling
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2024 Jan 29;701:149550. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2024.149550. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe beneficial effect of a beta-lactam antibiotic, Ceftriaxone (CEF), to improve depressive-like symptoms has been documented previously, attributed to its modulation of glutamate neurotransmission. Here, we aimed to determine whether CEF could improve LPS-altered glutamatergic signaling associated with neuroinflammation-allied depression. To assess our goals, we established a neuroinflammation-allied depression mice model by injecting lipopolysaccharides (LPS), followed by behavioral and biochemical analysis....
