Seeking Biomarkers of Early Childhood Malnutrition's Long-term Effects.
This article describes a research collaboration involving scientists from five centers in Barbados, China, Cuba and the USA. It builds on longer-term joint work between the Barbados Nutrition Study (which, over a 45-year span, has extensively documented nutritional, health, behavioral, social and economic outcomes of individuals who experienced protein-energy malnutrition in the first year of life and healthy controls from the same classrooms and neighborhoods) and the Cuban Neuroscience Center (which has developed low-cost brain imaging methods that can be readily used in low income settings to identify biomarkers for ear...

Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Wastewaters in Barbados, West Indies.
In this study of wastewater collected from two wastewater treatment plants in Barbados, caffeine and ibuprofen were detected at µg/L concentrations, whereas two steroid hormones (i.e. androstenedione, estrone) and several prescription pharmaceuticals were detected at ng/L concentrations. Among drugs of abuse, benzoylecgonine (i.e. metabolite of cocaine), MDMA (i.e. Ecstasy) and MDA (i.e. 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine) were present at the highest concentrations in untreated wastewater. Overall, these data show that there is potential impact in the marine environment in Barbados from CECs discharged into the coastal zone. ...

Renastart Use in an Infant on Peritoneal Dialysis.
The objective of the present case study was to examine whether Renastart, a pediatric renal formula (Nestlé Health Science, Florham Park, NJ, U.S.A.), could be used alongside expressed breast milk (EBM) to meet the nutritional needs of an infant with renal disease, while maintaining normal serum electrolytes.A 9-month-old infant received EBM with Similac PM 60/40 treated with Kayexalate (Concordia Pharmaceuticals, Bridgetown, Barbados) because of hyperkalemia. That formulation was not well tolerated, and the infant's growth trajectory declined. The infant was then switched to EBM with Renastart. During this intervention, ...

Zika Virus Outbreak, Barbados, 2015-2016.
Abstract Barbados is a Caribbean island country of approximately 285,000 people, with a thriving tourism industry. In 2015, Zika spread rapidly throughout the Americas, and its proliferation through the Caribbean islands followed suit. Barbados reported its first confirmed autochthonous Zika transmission to the Pan American Health Organization in January 2016, a month before the global public health emergency was declared. After detection of suspected Zika cases on Barbados in 2015, 926 individuals were described as suspected cases, and 147 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported through December 2016, th...

Taking Pains with Aloe for More Than 35 Centuries: From Tightening Skin to Loosening Bowels
Native to the southwest Arabian peninsula, species of the Aloe have provided soothing and antiseptic preparations for wounds and burns since at least the time that the Ebers papyrus was composed (c. 1550 BCE). A Greek surgeon in the Roman army, Dioscorides lauded the bitter juice of aloe for “conglutinating of wounds and loosening of the belly.” Indeed, aloe was prized as a laxative orally and as a healing astringent topically. As depicted on this French-language trade card from the Liebig Company (above),Aloe perryi (Zanzibar or Socotrine Aloe), is native to Socotra, an island east of Somalia. Closely related toA. per...

Profiles and behavioral consequences of child abuse among adolescent girls and boys from Barbados and Grenada.
Abstract The current study used latent class analysis to uncover groups of youths with specific abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) profiles in and outside the family, and identify how membership in each abuse group is associated with behavioral outcomes. Data were collected among a sample of male (n = 662; Mage = 13.02 years) and female (n = 689; Mage = 12.95 years) children and adolescents (9-17 years old) from Barbados and Grenada. Self-report surveys were completed by participants in school settings. Three latent classes of child abuse were distinguished among boys, including 'low a...

Genetic variants demonstrating flip-flop phenomenon and breast cancer risk prediction among women of African ancestry
ConclusionsWe found that PRS based on variants identified from prior GWASs conducted in women of European and Asian ancestries did not provide a comparable degree of risk stratification for women of African ancestry. Further large-scale fine-mapping studies in African ancestry populations are desirable to discover population-specific genetic risk variants. (Source: Breast Cancer Research and Treatment)

Trends in beverage prices following the introduction of a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages in Barbados
We present a descriptive analysis of initial price changes following implementation of the SSB tax using price data provided by a major supermarket chain in Barbados over the period 2014–2016. We summarize trends in price changes for SSBs and non-SSBs before and after the tax using year-on-year mean price per liter. We find that prior to the tax, the year-on-year growth of SSB and non-SSB prices was very similar (approximately 1%). During the quarter in which the tax was implemented, the trends diverged, with SSB price growth increasing to 3% and that of non-SSBs decreasing slightly. The growth of SSB prices outpaced non...

Why neither demographics nor feature pools can explain the missing Spanish plantation creoles
Publication date: Available online 8 December 2017 Source:Lingua Author(s): John H. McWhorter Theories that plantation creoles were all born as pidgins at West African coast slave castles, including that proposed in Author (2000), have not fared well among creolists, amidst a preference for supposing that creoles are born, or not, according to factors local to a given context. In this paper I spell out why, especially in light of research since, the “Afrogenesis” paradigm is still worth serious consideration. A key fact is the following. Many creolists argue that a creole did not appear when there was extensive blac...

12.1 The Integration of Child Mental Health  Services Into Primary Child Health Care in Barbados
The goal of this session is to review models of integrating child mental health services in primary health care in Barbados. Barbados is a densely populated Caribbean island where 27 percent of the 285,006 islanders are below the age of 20 years. Pediatric mental health services were traditionally provided in a clinic at the mental hospital, which was a deterrent for many families. The World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP), introduced to the Caribbean region in 2015, trains primary care physicians (PCPs) to identify child mental health disorders and provide supportive therapy.
