Assessing the effectiveness and implementation of a chronic disease self-management programme in faith-based organisations in Barbados: protocol for a cluster randomised parallel trial
Introduction In the COVID-19 environment of reduced patient interaction with the healthcare system, evidenced-based self-care of chronic disease is vital. We will evaluate the effect of an online chronic disease self-management programme (CDSMP) plus medication adherence tools on systolic blood pressure (SBP) (primary aim) and, seek to understand the barriers and facilitators to implementation of this modified CDSMP in faith-based organisations (FBOs) (secondary aim). Methods We will conduct an unblinded cluster randomised trial in FBOs throughout Barbados. Eligibility: Persons ages 35–70 years; a previous diagnosis...

Glycemic control and management of cardiovascular risk factors among adults with diabetes in the Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network (ECHORN) Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence of uncontrolled diabetes among adults in ECS. The high burden of elevated CVD risk explains the premature mortality we see in the region. Strategies are needed to improve glycemic control and CVD risk factor management among individuals with diabetes in the Caribbean.PMID:34253484 | DOI:10.1016/j.pcd.2021.06.011 (Source: Primary Care)

Origin and population structure of Brazilian hair sheep breeds
In conclusion, Brazilian hair sheep show an African origin and are characterized by diverse genetic composition, reinforcing the need for conservation of these genetic resources, and at the same time, this highly diverse group has variability that can be used in breeding programs.PMID:34087001 | DOI:10.1111/age.13093 (Source: Animal Genetics)

Epidemiology of colorectal cancer in Barbados: A short report
This study collected epidemiologic data from Barbadian patients with colorectal cancer. There was an opportunity for targeted screening in patients actively enrolled in clinics for management of chronic diseases, accounting for 72% of cases. We also identified areas of high incidence where resources should be directed in a screening programme.PMID:34080910 | DOI:10.1177/00494755211020573 (Source: Tropical Doctor)

The demographic features and outcome indicators of the Barbados HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Program, 2018-2019
CONCLUSIONS: Uptake of Barbados' national PrEP Program is excellent but fairly low continuation rates and the HIV positivity rate indicate the need for improved pre-ART initiation education and follow-up processes. Service utilisation is mainly by men who have sex with men, and provision expansion to other civil society partners and private practitioners, as well as increased public awareness could increase access by other high-risk groups.PMID:33907558 | PMC:PMC8064290 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2021.51 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)
