Pediatric anesthesia in North America
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 5% of Canadian children undergo general anesthesia annually, administered by fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologists in children's hospitals, general anesthesiologists in community hospitals, or family practice anesthesiologists in underserved regions. In Canada, the focus is on national-level evaluation and accreditation of pediatric anesthesia fellowship training, addressing challenges arising from workforce shortages, particularly in remote areas. Barbados, a Caribbean nation, lacks dedicated pediatric hospitals but has provided pediatric anesthesia since 1972 through anesthetists with ...

Prevalence and correlates of alcohol use among the elderly in the Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network (ECHORN) cohort study
CONCLUSION: We provide current estimates of alcohol problems among elderly Eastern Caribbean people. Among the sociodemographic, psychological, and cultural correlates examined, religious attendance was significant. Replicate longitudinal studies using DSM-5 alcohol dependence are recommended.PMID:38447411 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.108001 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Early childhood malnutrition impairs adult resting brain function using near-infrared spectroscopy
This study aims to investigate functional brain network alterations using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in adults, aged 45–51 years, from the Barbados Nutrition Study (BNS) who suffered from a single episode of malnutrition restricted to their first year of life (n = 26) and controls (n = 29). A total of 55 individuals from the BNS cohort underwent NIRS recording at rest. Results and discussionUsing functional connectivity and permutation analysis, we found patterns of increased Pearson’s correlation with a specific vulnerability of the frontal cortex in the PEM group (ps < 0.05). Using a graph theoretical approa...

A Phenomenological Exploration of Experiences Related to Learning Styles Among Undergraduate Medical Students in a Barbadian Medical School
CONCLUSION: LS theory and testing appear to be useful for student and teacher awareness. In practice, honing students' adaptability to varying learning settings may be more relevant in helping students achieve self-efficacy.PMID:37818529 | PMC:PMC10561650 | DOI:10.2147/AMEP.S428012 (Source: Adv Data)

CO < sub > 2 < /sub > emissions in Latin America: a time series perspective based on fractional integration
This article deals with the analysis of [Formula: see text] emissions in Latin America by using a long memory process based on fractional integration. Using data of [Formula: see text] emission and [Formula: see text] emissions per capita, for 32 Latin American and Caribbean countries, the results show significant differences according to the variable examined, the model used, and the country under examination. In particular, for the [Formula: see text] emissions, mean reversion is found in Belize and also under some circumstances in Antigua and Barbuda, Colombia, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Honduras, N...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6554: The Burden of Pediatric Visual Impairment and Ocular Diagnoses in Barbados
This study leverages Barbados’ unique eye care system to survey the eye diseases and VI prevalence in Barbadian children. Medical records of all patients aged <19 years who received ophthalmic care in Barbados’ two public eye care centers between January and December 2019 were reviewed, capturing the entirety of public pediatric eye care within the study period. Age at the first visit to the clinic and at the final visit in 2019, sex, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), past medical history, and clinical diagnoses were extracted and analyzed. VI was defined as a BCVA of 6/12 or worse...

READ-ing antimicrobial stewardship in the Caribbean: a tri-nation document review
CONCLUSIONS: Critical matters such as cross-programmatic coordination, the significance of individual action, and the need for bidirectional knowledge discourse are prominent in optimizing antimicrobial stewardship adaptation in these countries. CARICOM regional coordination has positively impacted the integration of infection prevention and control with antimicrobial stewardship across this knowledge network.PMID:37489236 | PMC:PMC10361420 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.106 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Coxiella burnetii shedding and serological status in pregnant and postpartum ewes
This study aimed to evaluate the occurence C. burnetii-DNA shedding by pregnant (vaginal mucus and feces) and postpartum (vaginal mucus, feces and milk) meat breed ewes from Saint Kitts. Additionally, antibodies anti-C. burnetii were detected in serum, and milk. Barbados Blackbelly ewes (n=187) were sampled using stratified convenience cross-sectional sampling. There were two animal groups: pregnant (n=96) and postpartum (n=91). Vaginal mucus (n=187), feces (n=177) and milk (n=83) samples were subjected to a TaqMan real time qPCR assay for C. burnetii based on the IS1111 multi copy element. IgG antibodies against C. burnet...
