The Use of Kinesthetic Empathy with Adults Living with Treatment Resistant Depression: A Survey Study
AbstractDance/movement therapy is an embodied healing practice which has been found to foster recovery from depression and boost quality of life. Although kinesthetic empathy holds great potential for addressing emotional dysregulation, it is an under-utilized dance/movement therapy intervention in health optimization, especially in adults living with treatment-resistant depression. The aim of this study was to collect data from dance/movement therapist on how they use kinesthetic empathy to foster self-regulation in adults living with treatment-resistant depression. A survey design was used to obtain this data. Eight danc...

Children and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: a Caribbean perspective
This study aims to assess coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) surveillance methods, health resources, vaccination coverage and income stratification and quantify burdens of disease and death in children and adolescents in the Caribbean. The investigation was a descriptive, cross-sectional study that included 15 Caribbean countries/territories and utilized surveys and secondary data sources. Quarantine and isolation measures were robust and surveillance strategies were similar. Pediatric specialists were available across the region, but few had designated pediatric hospitals or high-dependency units. There were more cases i...

Retrospective analysis of endometrial cancer among Afro-Caribbean women in Barbados 2008-2017
Trop Doct. 2022 Sep 4:494755221123190. doi: 10.1177/00494755221123190. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndometrial cancer data amongst Barbadian women was collected, to inform screening and management in this under-studied population. We analysed all recorded primary cases between January 1st 2008, and December 31st, 2017. Age-specific incidence, and crude mortality rates were calculated. Descriptive statistics characterized demographics, risk factors, prescription data and histopathology. Log-rank tests assessed simple group differences by EC type. Survival analysis based on tumour type was plotted using Kaplein-Meir curves...

Evaluating Health Inequality in Five Caribbean Basin Countries Using EQ-5D-5L
ConclusionThis study demonstrated that the EQ-5D-5L instrument can easily be added to national surveys. Inequality measures from this study can be used as baseline values for comparisons with future similar surveys in these five countries to infer changes in health inequality as measured by EQ-5D outcomes. These can be used to track the performance of policy initiatives aimed at specific demographic groups. (Source: Applied Health Economics and Health Policy)

Impact of Early Childhood Malnutrition on Adult Brain Function: An Evoked-Related Potentials Study
More than 200 million children under the age of 5 years are affected by malnutrition worldwide according to the World Health Organization. The Barbados Nutrition Study (BNS) is a 55-year longitudinal study on a Barbadian cohort with histories of moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) limited to the first year of life and a healthy comparison group. Using quantitative electroencephalography (EEG), differences in brain function during childhood (lower alpha1 activity and higher theta, alpha2 and beta activity) have previously been highlighted between participants who suffered from early PEM and controls. In ord...

Associations between age of menarche and genetic variation in women of African descent: genome-wide association study and polygenic score analysis
This study suggests that in women of African ancestry the genetic drivers of age at menarche may differ from those identified in populations of non-African ancestry, and that these differences are more pronounced in women living in Nigeria, although some associated trait loci may be shared across populations. This highlights the need for well-powered ancestry-specific genetic studies to fully characterise the genetic influences of age at menarche. (Source: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health)
