Spontaneous splenic rupture associated with scrub typhus: a case report
ConclusionsClinicians should consider the possibility of splenic rupture in patients with scrub typhus who display sudden-onset abdominal pain and unstable vital signs. In addition, splenic capsular rupture and extra-capsular hemorrhage are thought to be caused by splenomegaly and capsular distention resulting from red blood cell congestion in the red pulp destroying the splenic sinus.Graphical abstract (Source: Infectious Diseases of Poverty)

Azithromycin therapy in infants hospitalized for respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis: Airway matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels and subsequent recurrent wheeze
CONCLUSION: Azithromycin therapy in children hospitalized with RSV bronchiolitis had a short-term anti-inflammatory effect in reducing upper airway MMP-9 levels. However, the reduction in MMP-9 levels did not relate to subsequent RW post-RSV.TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study is a secondary analysis of the Azithromycin to Prevent Wheezing following severe RSV bronchiolitis-II clinical trial registered at Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02911935).PMID:38237675 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2024.01.001 (Source: Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology)

Cardiovascular Safety of Azithromycin in Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19: A Prespecified Pooled Analysis of the COALITION I and COALITION II Randomized Clinical Trials
The cardiovascular safety from azithromycin in the treatment of several infectious diseases has been challenged. In this prespecified pooled analysis of 2 multicenter randomized clinical trials, we aimed to assess whether the use of azithromycin might lead to corrected QT (QTc) interval prolongation or clinically relevant ventricular arrhythmias. In the COALITION COVID Brazil I trial, 667 patients admitted with moderate COVID-19 were randomly allocated to hydroxychloroquine, hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin, or standard of care. Periodontal disease prevalence and oral hygiene status of adults with cystic fibrosis: A case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, adults with CF had poor oral hygiene practices, with high levels of plaque and calculus. Despite this finding, adults with CF had lower levels of clinical gingivitis and periodontitis than seen in a non-CF control group. Further study is required to examine the causes of this phenomenon.PMID:38233039 | DOI:10.1111/jcpe.13944 (Source: Journal of Clinical Periodontology)

Antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from patients attending a medical laboratory, Institut Pasteur de Madagascar between 2014 and 2020: phenotypical and genomic characterisation in a subset of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates
Conclusions Our report provides a detailed dataset obtained through phenotypical and genotypical methods which will serve as a baseline for future surveillance of NG. We could not confirm the occurrence of ceftriaxone-resistant isolates. Our results highlight the importance of implementing quality-assured gonococcal antimicrobial resistance surveillance in Madagascar. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Infections)

Gut Microbiome Diversity and Antimicrobial Resistance After a Single Dose of Oral Azithromycin in Children: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Jan 16;110(2):291-294. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0651. Print 2024 Feb 7.ABSTRACTMass antibiotic distribution to preschool children resulted in alterations of the gut microbiome months after distribution. This individually randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluated changes in the gut microbiome and resistome in children aged 8 days to 59 months after one dose of oral azithromycin in Burkina Faso. A total of 450 children were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either placebo or azithromycin. Rectal samples were collected at baseline, 2 weeks, and 6 months after randomization and subjected to DNA deep sequen...

Azithromycin therapy in infants hospitalized for RSV bronchiolitis: airway MMP-9 levels and subsequent recurrent wheeze
Early-life RSV bronchiolitis is a significant risk factor for childhood asthma. In-vitro and in-vivo studies suggested that decreasing airway matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-9 during RSV bronchiolitis may be associated with clinical benefits. (Source: Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology)

A case report of diagnosis of cat-scratch disease using metagenomic next-generation sequencing
We present the case of a middle-aged male patient who developed fever, chills, anal distension, dizziness, and muscle pain for 10 days. The patient had a documented history of cat bites 1 month prior to the onset of symptoms. Following admission, he underwent an examination to determine superficial lymphadenopathy and hypoimmunity. Additionally, he had a fever during the disease. As the patient refused a needle biopsy of lymph nodes, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) was employed and B. henselae was detected in the peripheral blood. The patient was diagnosed with CSD and treated with a combination of azithromyc...

Azithromycin preserves adult hippocampal neurogenesis and behavior in a mouse model of sepsis
Brain Behav Immun. 2024 Jan 9;117:135-148. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2024.01.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe mammalian hippocampus can generate new neurons throughout life. Known as adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN), this process participates in learning, memory, mood regulation, and forgetting. The continuous incorporation of new neurons enhances the plasticity of the hippocampus and contributes to the cognitive reserve in aged individuals. However, the integrity of AHN is targeted by numerous pathological conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases and sustained inflammation. In this regard, the latter causes cog...

Successful treatment of glandular tularemia with azithromycin in a pregnant woman in Austria
AbstractTreatment of tularemia during pregnancy is challenging due to toxicity of standard treatment regimens. Here, we report a 31-year-old woman with glandular tularemia who was successfully treated with intravenous azithromycin. Follow-up examinations over a 6-month period showed a sustained response to treatment. She later gave birth to a healthy child. (Source: Infection)

Full trisomy 14 in one of bichorionic biamniotic twins
We describe the case of the lethal full trisomy (T) 14 in a fetus from bichorionic biamniotic (BCBA) twin pregnancy. This is a case of a 28-year-old primigravida, with an unremarkable personal and family history, who just like her 30-year-old husband, was without consanguinity between spouses. She conceived spontaneously, without a burdened gynecological-obstetric history. By the 12th week of pregnancy, she had hyperemesis gravidarum and one episode of bleeding due to which progesterone supplementation was prescribed. Due to asymptomatic bacteriuria, she took cefuroxime axetil in the 13th week of pregnancy and azithromycin...
