Azithromycin reduces bronchial wall thickening in infants with cystic fibrosis
The efficacy of azithromycin as an anti-inflammatory agent in infants with CF was investigated in the COMBAT-CF study [1]. Children with CF diagnosed by newborn screening were 1:1 randomly assigned to maintenance treatment with azithromycin or placebo from diagnosis until age of three, stratified by site. The primary outcome measure was structural airway disease as assessed on chest computed tomography scans (CTs) by the manual Perth-Rotterdam Annotated Grid Morphometric for CF (PRAGMA-CF) scoring method [2]. Wuhu decoction combined with azithromycin for treatment of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in Asian children: a systematic review and meta analysis of randomized controlled trials
Conclusion: Based on our meta-analysis findings, the combined therapy of Wuhu Decoction and azithromycin for treating pediatric Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia exhibited superior overall efficacy in comparison to azithromycin monotherapy. However, in the included 22 studies, the majority of evaluated factors showed unclear bias risks, and a persistent bias risk was consistently present within one category. Moreover, due to the low quality of evidence, interpreting these results should be approached with caution. Hence, we emphasize the necessity for future high-quality, multicenter, and large-sample clinical randomized con...

114. Rates of reinfection for Chlamydia trachomatis in adolescents and young adults: an assessment following the CDC STI Treatment Guidelines in 2021
In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revised the treatment recommendation for chlamydia trachomatis from single dose azithromycin to a 7-day course of doxycycline. Given the high risk of chlamydia infection in adolescents and young adults (AYA), this study evaluated reinfection rates before and after the change in CDC treatment guidelines. Mesenchymal Stromal Cells as Rescue Therapy for Refractory Chronic Lung Allograft Dysfunction: Analysis of Immunoregulatory Effects In Vitro and Preliminary Data of Safety In Vivo
Purpose: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been reported as a promising therapy for CLAD due to their immunomodulatory and tolerogenic properties. To assess MSC immunoregulatory/anti-remodeling effects in vitro and the safety profile in vivo we: 1) assessed bone marrow-derived MSC (BMSC) activity on normal precision cut lung slices (PCLS) cultures and 2) we monthly administered 1 x 106 BMSC/Kg BW to end stage CLAD patients who had previously failed several treatment lines including azithromycin, ECP and montelukast. Ceftriaxone-Resistant Gonorrhea - China, 2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Mar 28;73(12):255-259. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7312a2.ABSTRACTGonorrhea is a widespread sexually transmitted infection; in 2022, China reported 96,313 cases of gonorrhea, making it the fourth most common notifiable infectious disease in the country after viral hepatitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and syphilis. The rise in prevalence in antimicrobial-resistant strains, particularly the international spread of ceftriaxone-resistant clones, poses a formidable challenge to gonorrhea control. The China Gonococcal Resistance Surveillance Program (China-GRSP), established in 1987 and covering 19 of 34 p...

ERS/EBMT clinical practice guidelines on treatment of pulmonary chronic graft-versus-host disease in adults
Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) is a common complication after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, characterised by a broad disease spectrum that can affect virtually any organ. Although pulmonary cGvHD is a less common manifestation, it is of great concern due to its severity and poor prognosis. Optimal management of patients with pulmonary cGvHD is complicated and no standardised approach is available. The purpose of this joint European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation task force was to develop evidence-based recommendations regarding the treat...

Improvement of Clinical Findings, Meibography and Tear Film Parameters in Pediatric Ocular Rosacea Patients After a Standard Treatment Protocol
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that pediatric ocular rosacea patients may exhibit improved meibomian gland function, regression of corneal neovascularization, and enhanced tear film parameters following a standardized treatment protocol that includes both topical and systemic approaches.PMID:38512290 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2328791 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Efficacy of Single-Dose Azithromycin for Ocular Chlamydial Infection: A Longitudinal Study
In this study, four villages in Niger received a mass azithromycin distribution for trachoma. All 426 children aged 0-5 years residing in the study villages were offered conjunctival swabbing every 6 months to test for ocular Chlamydia trachomatis. Among the children infected with ocular Chlamydia before treatment, 6% (95% CI: 2-15%) tested positive for ocular Chlamydia infection 6 months later, and 15% (95% CI: 7-28%) tested positive 12 months later. The most important predictor of post-treatment ocular Chlamydia infection was pretreatment ocular Chlamydia infection (relative risk: 3.5, 95% CI: 1.3-9.4). Although the 6-mo...
