Azithromycin therapy for prevention of chronic lung disease of prematurity (AZTEC): a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2024 Apr 25:S2213-2600(24)00079-1. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(24)00079-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Systematic reviews have reported conflicting evidence on whether macrolide antibiotics reduce rates of chronic lung disease of prematurity (CLD) in at-risk preterm infants born at less than 30 weeks' gestation, including in those colonised with pulmonary Ureaplasma spp. Since an adequately powered trial has been lacking, we aimed to assess if the macrolide azithromycin improved survival without the development of physiologically defined moderate or severe CLD in preterm infants.METHODS: AZTEC ...

Detection of OXA-181 Carbapenemase in Shigella flexneri
We report the detection of OXA-181 carbapenemase in an azithromycin-resistant Shigella spp. bacteria in an immunocompromised patient. The emergence of OXA-181 in Shigella spp. bacteria raises concerns about the global dissemination of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacterales and its implications for the treatment of infections caused by Shigella bacteria.PMID:38666725 | DOI:10.3201/eid3005.231558 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Nash, Martin Holland Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide and is now largely confined to around 40 low- and middle-income countries. It is caused byChlamydia trachomatis (Ct), a contagious intracellular bacterium. The World Health Organization recommends mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin for treatment and control of ocular Ct infections, alongside improving facial cleanliness and environmental conditions to redu...

Streptococcal Pharyngitis: Rapid Evidence Review
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Apr;109(4):343-349.ABSTRACTGroup A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis is a common infection responsible for more than 6 million office visits in the United States annually. Only 10% of adults seeking care for a sore throat have group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis; however, 60% or more are prescribed antibiotics. Guidelines recommend using clinical decision rules to assess the risk of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection, followed by rapid antigen testing if a diagnosis is unclear, before prescribing antibiotics. Fever, tonsillar exudate, cervical lymphadenitis, and patien...

High cure rates of Mycoplasma genitalium following empiric treatment with azithromycin alongside frequent detection of macrolide resistance in Austria
ConclusionsMycoplasma genitalium was readily detected in this Austrian observational study, affected predominantly MSM and often presented as asymptomatic disease. We observed a worryingly high prevalence of AZM resistance mutations; however, empiric AZM treatment cleared twice as many MG infections as expected. (Source: Infection)

Neonatal anthropometric indicators of infant growth and mortality in Burkina Faso
CONCLUSIONS: Interventions for identifying infants at highest risk of mortality and growth failure should consider WAZ as part of their screening protocol.PMID:38639113 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980024000880 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Fragmentation characteristics-based nontargeted screening method of exogenous chemical residues in animal-derived foods using reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry
In this study, first, fragmentation characteristics of 51 classes of exogenous chemical residues were summarized based on experimental mass spectra of standards in reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) and mass spectra from the MassBank of North America (MoNA) library. According to the proportion of fragmentation characteristics to the total number of chemical residues in each class, four screening levels were defined to classify 51 classes of chemical residues. Then, a nontargeted screening method was developed based on the fragmentation characteristics. Th...
