Clinical manifestations and genetic mutation analysis of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type VII in China
CONCLUSION: The study's patients all presented with classic symptoms of MPS VII due to β-glucuronidase deficiency, with three new pathogenic mutations identified in the GUSB gene. Genetic counseling and prenatal testing were highlighted as crucial for disease prevention.PMID:38442846 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejmg.2024.104933 (Source: European Journal of Medical Genetics)

Increasing incidence of mastoidectomies in children : Result of reduced antibiotic therapy or late COVID-19 sequela?
CONCLUSION: No clear correlation with reduced outpatient antibiotic therapy could be found. Whether there exists an association with prior COVID infection cannot be judged at this time, due to the high number of asymptomatic and therefore unknown COVID infections.PMID:38429542 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-024-01435-w (Source: HNO)

Molecular profiling and the impact of treatment on outcomes in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) type-I and II
CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed the previously reported associations with MYC and TP63 in the prognostically relevant subgroups of ACC-I and II, respectively, and report immunologic differences among these subtypes. Survival outcomes are comparatively worse in ACC-I regardless of treatment type.PMID:38416410 | DOI:10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-23-3182 (Source: Clinical Cancer Research)

Predictors of Success of Adenoidectomy in the Treatment of Pediatric Chronic Rhinosinusitis
Conclusions: Adenoidectomy is a good first-line surgery for children aged 12 years and younger, especially in the 6 to 12 years group which had a high rate of success with 68% experiencing remission of symptoms after surgery.PMID:38400707 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241232879 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Dose-averaged LET optimized carbon-ion radiotherapy for head and neck cancers
Carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) is expected to be effective in treating tumors that are resistant to radiation therapy because of its excellent dose concentration and strong biological effects due to high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation. In the head and neck region, most reports of effective CIRT have been for non-squamous cell carcinomas. According to a Japanese multicenter study on CIRT, the 5-year overall survival (OS) and 5-year local control (LC) of 289 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma were 74  % and 68 %, respectively [1]. Evaluation of EGFR in prognostic characterization in histopathological variants of oral squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSION: Expression of EGFR could be established as a valuable biomarker with significant association in predicting aggressive potential and treatment response in various histopathological variants of OSCC. Further studies where EGFR could be linked to predictive indicators and tumor prognosis could be undertaken.PMID:38384049 | DOI:10.4103/jcrt.jcrt_1317_22 (Source: Cell Research)

Illness and (hyper)masculinity in 'HIMM comics from the USA
In this essay, I analyse HIMM comics from the USA, a specific textualisation of graphic medicine/pathography that deals with a variety of illness experiences by male cartoonists. It is my contention that, in the existing literature, the motif of masculinity in autobiographical health-related comics is an underdeveloped area of academic enquiry. As a result, my analysis focuses on how three North American men depict ill health in their work in relation to existing sociological understandings of male behaviour. The texts I discuss are John Porcellino’s The Hospital Suite (2014), a story about his abdominal tumour; Matt...
