Tympanoplasty can be Concurrent with Adenoidectomy. Tube Factor Assessment
AbstractTo assess changes in middle ear pressures following adenotonsillectomies in children, and to evaluate the possibility of performing tympanoplasty at the same surgical time. Prospective study in which tube function was assessed using tympanometry on the first postoperative day and on the seventh postoperative day after adenotonsillectomies. A total of 39 children aged 6.8  ± 2.6 years were evaluated. On the first postoperative day, 79.5% presented with changes in middle ear pressure. On the seventh postoperative day, only 12.8% maintained this change. Tube dysfunction following adenotonsillectomy is transient a...

Endotracheal enucleation and para ‐toluenesulfonamide injection for adenoid cystic carcinoma in the upper trachea: A novel therapeutic approach
We present a case of tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) treated with endotracheal enucleation followed by three doses of para-toluenesulfonamide (PTS)-lipiodol mixture injection. The treatment resulted in tumor eradication, improved airway patency, and absence of recurrence in 1  year, suggesting PTS as a promising alternative for inoperable ACC. AbstractWe present a case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) located in the upper trachea, which resulted in significant airway blockage, that was unsuitable for surgical removal due to concerns about functional impairment. Instead, endotracheal enucleation via rigid bron...

Imaging of salivary gland cancers derived from a sublingual gland herniated into the submandibular space: a report of three cases
AbstractSublingual gland herniation into the submandibular space through a mylohyoid muscle defect is a common anatomical variation; however, salivary gland cancers that arise from a herniated sublingual gland have not been described yet. Here, we report three patients with salivary gland cancers originating from a herniated sublingual gland. All tumors were detected as palpable submandibular masses, located anterior to the submandibular gland, medial to the mandible, and lateral to the mylohyoid muscle, with contact with the sublingual gland through a mylohyoid muscle defect. Intraoperative findings confirmed that the mas...

Platinum-based adjuvant chemoradiotherapy versus adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma
CONCLUSION: In terms of reducing locoregional failures in HNACC patients, POCRT may potentially offer a more effective therapeutic approach than using PORT alone, although it also entails an augmented burden of treatment-related toxicity.PMID:38625410 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-024-05719-0 (Source: Cancer Control)

Comparison of PAS and adenoids in patients with and without maxillary micrognathia before orthodontic treatment
ConclusionsSkeletal anomalies affect the dimension of the posterior airway space. There were differences among the subjects with maxillary micrognathia and these with a normal maxilla. However, the maxilla was only assessed in the sagittal direction, not in the transverse. This study showed that the morphology of the maxilla relates to the posterior airway space whereas the adenoids seem not to be affected.Clinical relevanceMaxillary micrognathia is significantly associated with a smaller depth of the posterior airway space at the palatal level compared to patients with maxillary eugnathia. A Case of a Eustachian Tube Hairy Polyp Misdiagnosed as an Adenoid Residual in a Child
This article discusses a 12-year-old female who had a growth at the Eustachian tube's entrance on the left side of the nasopharyngeal wall, as identified by a computed tomography scan of the neck soft tissue; it was suspected to be a hairy polyp originating from the left Eustachian tube. The diagnosis of a hairy polyp was confirmed through pathology. The hairy polyp at the Eustachian tube, in this case, showed an irregular form with a wide base, making it look similar to an adenoid; thus, increasing the risk of it being misdiagnosed as residual adenoid tissue.PMID:38605528 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241244667 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Mapping Human Immunity and the Education of Waldeyer's Ring
Annu Rev Genomics Hum Genet. 2024 Apr 9. doi: 10.1146/annurev-genom-120522-012938. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe development and deployment of single-cell genomic technologies have driven a resolution revolution in our understanding of the immune system, providing unprecedented insight into the diversity of immune cells present throughout the body and their function in health and disease. Waldeyer's ring is the collective name for the lymphoid tissue aggregations of the upper aerodigestive tract, comprising the palatine, pharyngeal (adenoids), lingual, and tubal tonsils. These tonsils are the first immune sentinels enc...

HPV-Related Multiphenotypic Sinonasal Carcinoma: A Clinicoradiological Series of 3 Cases With Full Endoscopic Surgical Outcome
Conclusion and Relevance: HMSC represents a newly identified diagnosis that constitutes a significant challenge for both clinicians and pathologists. It is crucial to acknowledge its indolent clinical course and the apparent contradiction between aggressive radiological features and the noninvasive nature of surgical findings. Skull base surgeons should be aware that, despite these complexities, endoscopic treatment is achievable in the majority of cases. This understanding is essential for the effective management of HMSC.PMID:38591784 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241247729 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Comparison of classical, coblation, and combined adenoidectomy techniques in paediatric patients: a single-blind, prospective study
ConclusionsThe combined approach, which was one of the techniques studied, demonstrated an intermediate profile in terms of operative time and intra-operative bleeding compared to the classical and coblation techniques. These findings suggest that this combined approach may be a feasible option for adenoidectomy in pediatric patients, considering its similar low incidence of postoperative complications. Acute invasive fungal sinusitis with orbital tip syndrome in patients on long-term use of ruxolitinib: a  case report
ConclusionOne of the bases for the occurrence of invasive fungal sinusitis may be the patient ’s long-term use of ruxolitinib for essential thrombocythemia. Some patients with invasive fungal sinuses have atypical nasal symptoms and are referred to the corresponding departments with eye and headache as the first symptoms. It is suggested that enhanced magnetic resonance imaging should be p erformed at an early stage. Surgical treatment in combination with antifungal and enhanced immunotherapy can effectively prevent the spread of infection and reduce the risk of death. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)
