Permanent occlusion of the Eustachian tube: a retrospective study on reopening procedures
This study retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and versatility of reopening procedures for the permanent occlusion of the cartilaginous Eustachian tube (POET) by analyzing four consecutive cases.MethodsThe study included all patients diagnosed with POET who suffered from Eustachian tube occlusion and glue ear. A combined approach of endoscopic transnasal/transoral laser surgery was utilized to reopen the POET. This was subsequently followed by balloon dilation (BET) and stenting for a duration of six weeks. In one distinct case, the Eustachian tube orifice was approached via a transtympanic method, where a balloon cathe...

Association of Helicobacter Pylori in Chronic Tonsillitis
The objective of the study was to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori in adenotonsillar tissue and to assess the association between the presence of H pylori with Chronic Tonsillitis or Adenotonsillitis. This was a cross sectional study conducted among 60 patients diagnosed with chronic tonsillitis and adeno tonsillitis undergoing tonsillectomy or adeno tonsillectomy meeting the paradise criteria in a tertiary care hospital, Pondicherry. Rapid urease test was done in the intraoperative period immediately after the specimens were taken. The rapid urease test kit was observed for color change from yellow to pink within...

Phase I/II Study of A Novel MDM-2 Inhibitor (APG-115-Alrizomadlin) in p53 Wild Type Salivary Gland Cancers
Malignant salivary gland cancers (SGC) are rare tumors of the head and neck with no approved therapeutics in the recurrent and/or metastatic setting. The most common histology is adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and the median progression free survival (mPFS) in patients with untreated disease is 2.8 months (mo). MDM2 gene amplifications are common in these tumors and preclinical evidence supports the activity of MDM2 inhibitors both as monotherapy (mono) and in combination (combo) with chemotherapy. Prognostic Value of Time To Progression vs. Tumor Volume Doubling Time in Patients with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Metastatic To The Lung
The objective of this study was to retrospectively assess the natural history of ACC lung metastasis and evaluate tumor dynamics using RECIST criteria and tumor volume doubling time (TVDT). (Source: International Journal of Radiation Oncology * Biology * Physics)

Efficacy and Tolerability of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors (VEGFRi) for Recurrent/Metastatic Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (R/M ACC): a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ACC has a high rate of recurrence and distant metastasis. There is no FDA-approved systemic therapy for R/M ACC. Given high VEGFA expression in ACC and association with poorer prognosis, various clinical trials have assessed VEGFRi in R/M ACC but are mostly single-arm studies with small sample sizes. The relatively low level of evidence has led to debate over the adoption of VEGFRi in ACC management. Given remaining uncertainty, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating efficacy, safety, and tolerability of VEGFRi in R/M ACC. Survival Outcomes following Pulmonary Metastasis-Directed Local Therapy (PM-LT) Relative to No Metastasis-Directed Intervention in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC)
ACC has a high rate of recurrence and distant metastasis (DM), despite aggressive curative-intent primary therapy. The lung is the most common site of DM, most often with indolent disease growth. Given the lack of FDA-approved systemic therapy for metastatic ACC, PM-LT is frequently used. The survival impact of PM-LT is not known and there is no consensus on whether routine PM-LT is appropriate. The purpose of this study was to assess the survival outcomes of ACC patients (pts) who underwent PM-LT and compare to those who did not. Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Pterygopalatine Fossa: Report of a Rare Case
AbstractAdenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant neoplasm that predominantly arises from major and minor salivary glands, accounting for about 1% of head and neck malignancies. ACCs originating from the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) are extremely rare. In this case report, we present a 77-year-old male patient who experienced a two-year hemi-facial numbness and mild trismus, with intact nasal mucosa. He underwent Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which revealed opacification of the left PPF with extension to the left infratemporal fossa and osteolytic areas of the sphenoid bone. His...

Otorhinolaryngological Manifestations among People Living with HIV/AIDS in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: a Cross-Sectional Study
AbstractHuman immunodeficiency virus/Acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS) is well known to be a major public health problem globally. On the other hand, HIV/AIDS is associated with various otorhinolaryngological manifestations. On the other hand, there has been a global reduction in the burden of otorhinolaryngological manifestations since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy though there are limited studies on otorhinolaryngological manifestations among HIV/AIDS patients in Tanzania. A hospital based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Ilala District in Dar es Salaam from November ...

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Esophagus with Lung Metastasis: Case Report
In this study, we present a case of ACC originating in the upper esophagus with lung metastasis. The patient, a middle-aged female, was admitted to the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine due to an esophageal mass discovered during physical examination that had been present for 4.5 years, along with a newly identified pulmonary nodule for 2 weeks. An X-ray barium meal revealed the presence of a benign esophageal cervical mass. Gastroscopy revealed elevated lesions below the esophageal inlet, and a pathological biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of EACC. The aim of this case report is to enhance understanding o...
