Breast Cancer Subtypes: Clinicopathologic Features and Treatment Considerations
AbstractPurpose of reviewThe purpose of this review is to provide an overview of ten unique breast cancer subtypes and their clinicopathologic features and treatment implications.Recent findingsRecent findings show that while many subtypes (mucinous, papillary, tubular, apocrine) have favorable biology, with better overall survival than invasive ductal carcinoma, some (metaplastic, adenoid cystic) are more aggressive portending worse prognosis for patients.SummaryThe differences in histology represented in these breast cancer subtypes often impacts biology, behavior, and prognosis. Due to their rarity, additional research ...

Surgical Management of Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Beyond Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy
Pediatric patients with persistent obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after adenotonsillectomy often have additional sites of upper airway obstruction such as the tongue base or larynx. Sleep endoscopy and cross-sectional, dynamic imaging can be used to direct surgical management of persistent OSA. The tongue base is one of the most common sites of obstruction in children with persistent OSA, especially for patients with Trisomy 21. Lingual tonsillectomy, tongue suspension, and/or posterior midline glossectomy may be used to address lingual tonsil hypertrophy and tongue base obstruction. Epiglottopexy and/or supraglottoplasty m...

Care of the Pediatric Patient for Ambulatory Tonsillectomy With or Without Adenoidectomy: The Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia Position Statement
Anesth Analg. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006645. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe landscape of ambulatory surgery is changing, and tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is one of the most common pediatric surgical procedures performed nationally. The number of children undergoing tonsillectomy on an ambulatory basis continues to increase. The 2 most common indications for tonsillectomy are recurrent throat infections and obstructive sleep-disordered breathing. The most frequent early complications after tonsillectomy are hemorrhage and ventilatory compromise. In areas lacking a dedicated children's hosp...

Head and neck cancers: reporting indications and results of hadrontherapy of a dual beam facility
ConclusionHN tumors are major indications for particle treatment around the world and at our center. Particle treatment might be personalized for each patient, with CIRT indicated for radioresistant tumors such as ACC and MM. Data on oncologic outcomes of CIRT at our center are consistent with published series. (Source: Health and Technology)

Surgical Management of Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Beyond Adenotonsillectomy
While adenotonsillectomy is the primary treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), persistent OSA after surgery is common and may be due to residual obstruction at the nose, nasopharynx, and/or palate. Comprehensive evaluation for persistent pediatric OSA ideally includes clinical examination (with or without awake nasal endosocpy) as well as drug-induced sleep endoscopy in order to accurately identify sources of residual obstruction. Depending on the site of obstruction, some of the surgical management options include submucous inferior turbinate resection, septoplasty, adenoidectomy, and expansion sphincter ph...

The Fundamental Role of Multidisciplinary Approach in Complex Head and Neck Pathology: A Case Report of Maxillary Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Mar 19:1455613241240887. doi: 10.1177/01455613241240887. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare tumor, with a documented annual incidence ranging from 3 to 4.5 cases per million. It constitutes approximately 1% of all head and neck malignancies and around 10% of salivary gland tumors. It is imperative to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the most appropriate therapeutic outcome. Treatment strategies usually involve a multidisciplinary approach and may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or various combinations of these. In this context, we present ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1205: Exploring Immunological Effects and Novel Immune Adjuvants in Immunotherapy for Salivary Gland Cancers
Miki Takahara Salivary gland cancer (SGC) is rare and comprises over 20 histological subtypes. Recently, clinical experience regarding immunotherapies for SGCs has been accumulating, yet their efficacy remains controversial. Understanding the tumor microenvironment (TME), including the expression of immune checkpoint molecules in SGC, is crucial to optimizing immunotherapy. In this review, we demonstrate that high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma and salivary duct carcinoma generally exhibit immune-hot TME with high immune cell infiltration, frequent genetic mutations, and robust immune checkpoint molecule expression. In...
