Study on the construction of nomogram prediction model for prognostic assessment of heart failure patients based on serological markers and echocardiography
CONCLUSIONS: MEWS, LVEDD, and sST2 increase as the NYHA cardiac function grade of HF patients increases and LVEF decreases, which can reflect the severity of the disease to a certain extent. Additionally, the nomogram model established based on this has a high predictive value for the long-term prognosis of patients and can formulate effective intervention measures for quantitative values.PMID:38639523 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35913 (Source: European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences)

Non-compliant packaging and illicit smokeless tobacco in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: findings of a pack analysis
Conclusions Weak and poorly enforced ST control policies may be slowing the progress of tobacco control in South Asia. Standardised regulations are required for packaging and labelling ST. Improving compliance and reducing sale of cheap illicit products may require business licensing and market surveillance. (Source: Tobacco Control)

Standard smokeless tobacco packaging: potential impact on perceived attractiveness, warning label visibility and harm perceptions among adults in Bangladesh
Conclusion The findings suggest a standard shape and size for SLT sold in Bangladesh, coupled with proper implementation of HWLs per the law, could improve HWL noticeability and increase harm perceptions. Additional plain packaging policies that also standardise pack colour may be required to reduce attractive colours and branding. (Source: Tobacco Control)

Tobacco imagery in popular films in China from 2001 to 2020: a declining trend
Conclusion Tobacco imagery remains in films in China. The relevant authorities and film producers should ban films with tobacco imagery in China; for example, they should ban films with tobacco imagery from participating in awards, add warnings to films with tobacco imagery and give films containing tobacco imagery a default ‘R’ classification. Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1858: Recent Progress in Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials for Flame Retardance and Fire-Warning Applications
ei Wang Graphene-like 2D nanomaterials, such as graphene, MXene, molybdenum disulfide, and boron nitride, present a promising avenue for eco-friendly flame retardants. Their inherent characteristics, including metal-like conductivity, high specific surface area, electron transport capacity, and solution processability, make them highly suitable for applications in both structural fire protection and fire alarm systems. This review offers an up-to-date exploration of advancements in flame retardant composites, utilizing pristine graphene-like nanosheets, versatile graphene-like nanosheets with multiple functions, and co...

Prediction of cardiac worsening through to cardiogenic shock in patients with acute heart failure
ConclusionsHalf of patients admitted with AHF experience WHF or new-onset CS. Chronic kidney disease, tricuspid valve regurgitation, and elevated pro-adrenomedullin concentrations predict these events. They could potentially serve as early warning signs for further deterioration in AHF patients. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Identification of Early Warning Signals of Infectious Diseases in Hospitals by Integrating Clinical Treatment and Disease Prevention
AbstractThe global incidence of infectious diseases has increased in recent years, posing a significant threat to human health. Hospitals typically serve as frontline institutions for detecting infectious diseases. However, accurately identifying warning signals of infectious diseases in a timely manner, especially emerging infectious diseases, can be challenging. Consequently, there is a pressing need to integrate treatment and disease prevention data to conduct comprehensive analyses aimed at preventing and controlling infectious diseases within hospitals. This paper examines the role of medical data in the early identif...

Striking Amazonian butterfly is result of ancient hybrid event
When separate species mate, it’s often an evolutionary dead end. Even if breeding succeeds, it can lead to infertile offspring, such as mules, or to the two species gradually merging into one as they interbreed over generations. An Amazonian butterfly species represents a rare third scenario. In a study out today in Nature , researchers report that Heliconius elevatus —a red, black, and yellow butterfly found throughout the Amazon—is a genetically unique, reproductively healthy insect that resulted from an ancient pairing of two other, still-present butterfly species . The work con...

New initiative aims to bolster funding for scientists in war-torn Ukraine
WASHINGTON, D.C.— For astrophysicist David Spergel, teaching at a summer school about data science in August 2023 in Ukraine was a “surreal” experience. At times, utterly normal—smart students and collegial dinners in the charming cobblestoned city of Lviv. But punctuated by sirens and cellphone alerts warning of Russian missile attacks that compelled attendees to seek refuge in bomb shelters. Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation , started to think there had to be something more the West could do to aid his Ukrainian colleagues. Eight months later, that idea has blossomed into the Scienc...

Translation into French and republication of: "Home treatment for patients with cancer-associated venous thromboembolism"
Rev Med Interne. 2024 Apr 16:S0248-8663(24)00096-1. doi: 10.1016/j.revmed.2024.04.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients hospitalised with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), and notably patients with pulmonary embolism, often remain in hospital for extended periods due to the perceived risk of complications. However, several studies have shown that home treatment of selected patients is feasible and safe, with a low incidence of adverse events. This may offer clear benefits for patients' quality of life, hospital planning and cost to the health service. Nonetheless, there is a need for a VTE risk-stratification tool ...
