Multimodal treatment, including extracorporeal shock wave therapy, for refractory chronic tension-type headache: a case report
ConclusionA patient with chronic tension-type headache refractory to regular treatment was successfully treated with a multimodal approach including extracorporeal shock wave therapy in addition to standard treatment. For patients with tension-type headache accompanied by myofascial trigger points, it may be recommended to promptly consider aggressive multimodal treatment that includes extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Two glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenases with distinctive roles in Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000
Microbiol Res. 2023 Oct 19;278:127530. doi: 10.1016/j.micres.2023.127530. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH or Gap) is a ubiquitously distributed enzyme that plays an essential role in the glycolytic and gluconeogenic pathways. However, additional roles have been described unrelated to its enzymatic function in diverse organisms, often linked to its presence in the cell surface or as a secreted protein. Despite being a paradigm among multifunctional/moonlighting proteins, little is known about its possible roles in phytopathogenic bacteria. In the present work we have studied thr...

Purification and characterization of thioredoxin reductase enzyme from commercial Spirulina platensis tablets by affinity chromatography and investigation of the effects of some chemicals and drugs on enzyme activity
AbstractThioredoxin reductase (TrxR, enzyme code [E.C.] 1.6.4.5) is a widely distributed flavoenzyme that catalyzes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-dependent reduction of thioredoxin and many other physiologically important substrates.Spirulina platensis is a blue –green algae that is often used as a dietary supplement.S. platensis is rich in protein, lipid, polysaccharide, pigment, carotenoid, enzyme, vitamins and many other chemicals and exhibits a variety of pharmacological functions. In the present study, a simple and efficient method to purify TrxR fromS. platensis tablets is reported. The extrac...

Microbial cell autofluorescence as a method for measuring the intracellular content of B2 and B6 vitamins
In this report, we demonstrate a simple, rapid, and sufficiently trustworthy spectrofluorimetric method for determining the content of vitamins B2 and B6 in yeast cells which consists of cells growing, harvesting, washing, and resuspending in a buffer, and then measuring the emitted visible light using specific wavelength of excitation (λex=340 nm and λem=385 nm for pyridoxine; λex=460 nm and λem=535 nm for riboflavin). The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) estimated through measurements of vitamin fluorescence were below 0.005 μg/ml for riboflavin and below 0.05 μg/ml for pyridoxine, respectively. I...

Case report: De novo variant of SETD1A causes infantile epileptic spasms syndrome
Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) is one of the most common epileptic encephalopathies of infancy, with typical clinical features defined by a triad of epileptic spasms, hypsarrhythmia, and developmental delay. Genetic factors are important causes of IESS. The SETD1A (SET Domain Containing 1A) gene encodes a histone lysine methyltransferase that activates gene transcription through histone H3 lysine K4 methylation. Mutations in the SETD1A gene have been associated with schizophrenia, and some have been reported to cause seizures. Herein, we report a case of IESS caused by a SETD1A gene mutation. Video electroencep...

Over-the-Counter Medications in Pregnancy
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Oct;108(4):360-369.ABSTRACTHigh-quality research on the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter medications in pregnancy is limited. Physicians should explore nonpharmacologic treatments before recommending medication. For nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), H1 antihistamines, and ginger are safe and effective. Physicians can recommend calcium carbonate, H2 antihistamines, and proton pump inhibitors for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Osmotic laxatives, fiber preparations, and probiotics are safe and effective treatments for constipation. Many over-the-counter topical med...
