Molecular characterization of Anaplasma ovis Msp4 protein in strains isolated from ticks in Turkey: A multi-epitope synthetic vaccine antigen design against Anaplasma ovis using immunoinformatic tools
This study aimed to reveal potential vaccine candidate epitopes in Msp4 protein using sequence data from Anaplasma ovis isolates and then to design a multi-epitope protein to be used in vaccine formulations against Anaplasma ovis. For this purpose, Msp4 gene was sequenced from Anaplasma ovis isolates (n:6) detected in ticks collected from sheep in Turkey and the sequence data was compared with previous sequences from different countries in order to detect the variations of Msp4 gene/protein. Potential vaccine candidate and diagnostic epitopes were predicted using various immunoinformatics tools. Among the discovered vaccin...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 250: Active Surveillance of Powassan Virus in Massachusetts Ixodes scapularis Ticks, Comparing Detection Using a New Triplex Real-Time PCR Assay with a Luminex Vector-Borne Panel
In this study, a Taqman-based triplex real-time PCR assay was developed for the simultaneous and quantitative detection of Powassan virus and Powassan virus lineage II (deer tick virus) in Ixodes scapularis ticks. An exon–exon junction internal control was built-in to allow for accurate detection of RNA quality and the failure of RNA extraction. The newly developed assay was also applied to survey deer tick virus in tick populations at 13 sites on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard Island in Massachusetts. The assay’s performance was compared with the Luminex xMAP MultiFLEX Vector-born...

Molecular and next-generation sequencing analysis of tick-borne pathogens of Rhipicephalus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in cattle and dogs
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 1;252:107138. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107138. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTicks are small and adaptable arachnid ectoparasites and global carriers of various pathogens that threaten both human and animal health. They are present in many parts of China. A total of 858 ticks were collected from various regions and hosts, then subjected to species identification based on morphological and molecular characteristics, as described in the authors' previous study. Eighty-three individual tick samples were selected for screening pathogens based on metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and polym...

Exploring the relationship of supernumerary recurrent renal calculi formation and tick-borne infections: a case report
A 51-year-old male with a history of Cacchi-Ricci disease and long-standing infection with various species of Borrelia, Babesia, and Bartonella presented with recurrent symptoms of right-sided flank pain. Numerous renal calculi were identified on imaging. The etiology of the calculi had not been previously elucidated. Symptoms intermittently date back to 2002 when uric acid stones were identified. Subsequent calculi analysis revealed calcium oxalate stones. Despite the commonality of nephrolithiasis in patients with Cacchi-Ricci disease, the extreme number of calculi and recurrent presentation of symptoms persisted despite...

Borrelia turicatae from Ticks in Peridomestic Setting, Camayeca, Mexico
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Feb;30(2):380-383. doi: 10.3201/eid3002.231053.ABSTRACTWe conducted surveillance studies in Sinaloa, Mexico, to determine the circulation of tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes. We collected argasid ticks from a home in the village of Camayeca and isolated spirochetes. Genomic analysis indicated that Borrelia turicatae infection is a threat to those living in resource-limited settings.PMID:38270112 | PMC:PMC10826751 | DOI:10.3201/eid3002.231053 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Serological and molecular epidemiological investigation of Mediterranean spotted fever in Yunnan Province, China
CONCLUSIONS: This research reveals a correlation between MSF prevalence, geography, and climate in Yunnan. The paucity of prior studies underscores MSF's potential diagnostic challenges in the region. Comprehensive understanding of the pathogen's distribution is pivotal for intervention. Given the study's scope and Yunnan's unique setting, additional research is advocated.PMID:38262571 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2024.105560 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)
