Tick-Borne Illnesses in Emergency and Wilderness Medicine
This review highlights the causative organisms, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common tick-borne illnesses in the United States, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, Powassan virus, and alpha-gal syndrome. Tick bite prevention strategies and some basic tick removal recommendations are also provided. (Source: Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America)

Subolesin knockdown in tick cells provides insights into vaccine protective mechanisms
In this study, transcriptomics and proteomics analyses were conducted together with graph theory data analysis in wild type and Sub knockdown (KD) tick ISE6 cells in order to identify and characterize the functional implications of Sub in tick cells. The results support a key role for Sub in the regulation of gene expression in ticks and the relevance of this antigen in vaccine development against ticks and TBDs. Proteins with differential representation in response to Sub KD provide insights into vaccine protective mechanisms and candidate tick protective antigens.PMID:38508929 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.006 (Source: Vaccine)

GSE236747 Subolesin knockdown in tick cells provides insights into vaccine protective mechanisms
In this study, RNAseq and proteomic analyses were carried out in wild type and Subolesin knockdown tick ISE6 cells in order to identify and characterize the functional implications of Subolesin in tick cells, demonstrating once again the importance of this antigen in vaccine development against tick and TBDs. The Risk of Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in India as a Growing Health Concern
This article includes all the cases of CCHF that have occurred in India from the year 2011, along with the fatality rates associated with this disease. Also this study discusses the need to explore some specific drugs for the management and prevention of such diseases. In addition, the pathogenesis of the disease progression, along with some protective measures suggested by the government has been described for prevention of CCHF. Subsequently, this article attempted to draw attention towards the risk that may be posed by CCHF in the coming scenario, emphasizing the importance of taking proactive measures in anticipation o...

Comparative analysis of the efficacy of vaccines using structural protein subunits of the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus
The severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) represents a significant emerging health threat as a tick-borne pathogen that causes SFTS, with mortality rates ranging between 10 and 30%. Despite the considerable risk presented by SFTSV, an effective vaccine has yet to be developed. Our study assessed the efficacy of recombinant protein vaccines, focusing on the purified nucleocapsid protein (NP) and surface glycoproteins (Gn and Gc), against SFTSV in both singular and combined formulations. Individual vaccinations with NP or Gn subunits yielded partial protection in type I interferon receptor-knockout (IFNAR...

Towards modelling tick-virus interactions using the weakly pathogenic Sindbis virus: Evidence that ticks are competent vectors
Most tick-borne viruses (TBVs) are highly pathogenic and require high biosecurity, which severely limits their study. We found that Sindbis virus (SINV), predominantly transmitted by mosquitoes, can replicate in ticks and be subsequently transmitted, with the potential to serve as a model for studying tick-virus interactions. We found that both larval and nymphal stages of Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides can be infected with SINV-wild-type (WT) when feeding on infected mice. SINV replicated in two species of ticks (R. haemaphysaloides and Hyalomma asiaticum) after infecting them by microinjection. Injection of ticks with SI...

Emergent spotted fever group Rickettsiae infections among hard ticks in Islamic Republic of Iran
CONCLUSION: Considering the discovery of infected ticks in the Islamic Republic of Iran, there is a need to establish a tick control programme in the country, paying attention to populations at high-risk.PMID:38491900 | DOI:10.26719/emhj.24.030 (Source: Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal)

A case of transfusion-transmission Anaplasma phagocytophilum from leukoreduced red blood cells
CONCLUSION: This is a confirmed case of TT-HGA. Although rare, TT-HGA has been reported with LR-RBCs and platelets. In endemic areas, testing for tick-borne associated infections should be considered when investigating post-transfusion complications.PMID:38491925 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17783 (Source: Transfusion)
