From struggle to strength in African and Middle Eastern newcomers ’ integration stories to Canada: A participatory health equity research study
ConclusionsCommunity building, friendships, and local services emerged as key elements for future immigrant service research. Utilizing a participatory health research approach allowed us to respond to the call for social justice-oriented research that helps to generate scientific knowledge for promoting culturally adaptive health care and access for marginalized populations. IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 577: Exploring Secondary School Athletic Trainers & rsquo; Perspectives in Managing Mental Health Situations
Conclusion: This study demonstrated the gap between organizational and individual preparation. The majority of SSATs respondents expressed moderate to high confidence in their ability to manage mental health disorders, despite the lack of mental health policies or procedures in their secondary schools. This study recommends that SSATs create guidelines or procedures in the areas where they are least confident and prepared to offer mental health management for minor student–athletes. They can use the interassociation recommendations and the NATA guidelines for mental health care to close the gap. (Source: Inte...

369. Recurrent Trauma, Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Substance Use Behaviors Among Trauma Exposed Youth
Both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) incur a higher risk of trauma exposure, which implicates trauma exposure as a pathway by which comorbid PTSD and SUD could be facilitated and maintained. Although trauma exposure has been shown to mediate prospective associations between PTSD symptoms and SUD behaviors among college students, this pathway has not been assessed among youth. 296. Network Analysis Identifies Working Memory as a Key Target for Facilitating Subjective Well-Being
In response to rising rates of stress-related psychopathology, resilience trainings have proliferated. These trainings often target student populations, as the transition to college marks a sensitive period for the emergence of psychiatric disorders; however, these programs can be time-intensive, as they typically target multiple processes linked to resilience. Understanding the relationships between these target processes might allow for the simplification of these trainings, facilitating dissemination and scalability. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

Key Learnings from 'Seniors of Canada': A Community Project Aimed to Disrupt Ageism
This article highlights insights gained since the inception of the project, including three key learnings: (1) Building bridges across academia and community, (2) Intergenerational connection and digital tools, and (3) The power of visual storytelling. We provide a practical overview of a successful knowledge mobilization/community outreach project and showcase the power of bridging academia and community for social change.PMID:38679950 | DOI:10.1017/S0714980824000151 (Source: Canadian Journal on Aging)

Quality and Effectiveness of AI Tools for Students and Researchers for Scientific Literature Review and Analysis
This study scrutinizes free AI tools tailored for supporting literature review and analysis in academic research, emphasizing their response to direct inquiries. Through a targeted keyword search, we cataloged relevant AI tools and evaluated their output variation and source validity. Our results reveal a spectrum of response qualities, with some tools integrating non-academic sources and others depending on outdated information. Notably, most tools showed a lack of transparency in source selection. Our study highlights two key limitations: the exclusion of commercial AI tools and the focus solely on tools that accept dire...

Moderating Effect of Trait Mindfulness in the Association Between Problematic Social Media Use and Anxiety Among Lebanese University Students
Conclusion: Findings open up possibilities for new therapeutic approaches when dealing with PSMU among university students. Although further longitudinal studies are required, we preliminarily suggest that the use of trait mindfulness-based interventions may help reduce anxiety levels in students who present with severe PSMU.Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2024;26(2):23m03664.Author affiliations are listed at the end of this article.PMID:38684016 | DOI:10.4088/PCC.23m03664 (Source: The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders)

A Comparison of Virtual Reality and Traditional Audio-Recorded Hearing Voices Simulations: Their Impact on Empathy in Health Care Students
Nurs Educ Perspect. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000001271. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmpathy is essential to the development of communication skills. Simulating psychosis to develop empathy for mental health patients is complex; we hypothesized that virtual reality (VR) would be effective in increasing empathy in health care students. This experimental study compared the effectiveness of a VR simulation with a traditional hearing voices simulation as measured by the Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale-Revised. Twenty-five health care students were randomized into two groups. The results indicated that both simulated...

Taking High-Fidelity Simulation to the Next Level: Nursing in Nontraditional Environments
Nurs Educ Perspect. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000001275. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNurse educators must prepare nursing students to be competent first responders and providers in nontraditional situations. We developed a course that provides in-depth experiential instruction in disaster nursing, remote/austere nursing, and global health. The Nursing in Nontraditional Environments course provides nursing students with the knowledge and skills to provide quality care to patients in environments outside traditional hospitals and clinics. The course merges survival skills with austere care using evidence-base...
