Medical students' knowledge about human papillomavirus (HPV), HPV vaccine and head and neck cancer
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2024 Dec 31;20(1):2344248. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2024.2344248. Epub 2024 Apr 24.ABSTRACTThe Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that significantly affects the population worldwide. HPV preventive methods include vaccination, prophylactics, and education. Different types of cancers associated with HPV usually take years or decades to develop after infections, such as Head and Neck Cancer(HNC). Therefore, HPV prevention can be considered cancer prevention. A sample of medical students in Puerto Rico was evaluated to assess their knowledge about HPV, HPV vaccine, and HNC throu...

A method for assessing student ability to apply anatomical knowledge within a traditional anatomy laboratory examination
We describe here our method for measuring student success in learning human anatomy in this manner, highlighting the direct linkage between the learning activities and the assessment tasks. We describe our performance scoring method and how we include this data in the calculation of an anatomy examination grade. As an indicator of our success with this approach, we include performance scores for the applied anatomy questions included on the laboratory component of our unit examinations for two successive academic years. We conclude with summary comments from students regarding the applied anatomy learning activities and as...

Domains, competences and learning outcomes for undergraduate education in periodontology
CONCLUSIONS: Specific learning outcomes have been proposed within each competence area, that is in Domain I (n = 10), Domain II (n = 13), Domain III (n = 33) and Domain IV (n = 12). Teaching methods and learning activities based on the different dimensions of the cognitive process have been proposed. Additionally, 10 key learning outcomes have been proposed as exit outcomes, which implies their accomplishment within the final assessment of any graduating student.PMID:38655768 | DOI:10.1111/jcpe.13991 (Source: Journal of Clinical Periodontology)

Large-scale, mobile and technology-enhanced serious game for interprofessional education: pilot study and lessons learnt
This report describes the design and pilot testing of a large-scale, mobile, technology-enhanced serious game embedded in the IPE curriculum in Geneva, Switzerland. Organized into teams of eight, the students were tasked with finding a young patient who had just escaped from the intensive care unit. Through a series of 10 stations, they explored hospital- and community-based locations of the healthcare system and were engaged in various learning and game activities; they were rewarded with cues to unveil the mystery. A total of 582 undergraduate students from seven disciplines (medicine, midwifery, nursing, nutrition-diete...

Collaboration in action: successful implementation of a learner-driven virtual interprofessional education curriculum in the clinical learning environment
J Interprof Care. 2024 Apr 24:1-6. doi: 10.1080/13561820.2024.2343826. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThough technological capabilities to provide high-quality, flexible interprofessional education (IPE) have continued to grow, this remains a largely undeveloped area in the clinical learning environment (CLE). To address this gap, the University of Minnesota launched the Collaboration in Action: Learner-Driven Curriculum (CIA-LDC) as an IPE model designed for sustainability in a post-pandemic world. Over the course of two academic years, the CIA-LDC framework evolved and expanded through an iterative, data-informed approach...

Teaching the tutors: use of an OSTE to train medical students to be peer tutors
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Jun 1;48(2):368-377. doi: 10.1152/advan.00007.2024.ABSTRACTFirst-year medical students are often challenged by the rapid pace and large volume of content that must be learned. Peer teaching has emerged as a supportive educational strategy. However, the most effective strategies for training peer tutors (PTs) for their role are not known. This paper examines the use of an Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE) to augment PT training sessions. Applying deliberate practice as a conceptual framework, an OSTE was used to provide tutors with an opportunity to practice their skills and receive feedba...

Evaluating The Effect of Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair with Concomitant Subacromial Decompression on 2, 4, and 6 Year Reoperation Rates
In this study, we compare mid-term revision surgery rates in patients undergoing arthroscopic RCR with or without concomitant ASD.METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted using a national all-payer claims database. Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Disease, 10th Revision, codes were used to identify patients who underwent primary arthroscopic RCR with or without ASD in the United States. The primary study outcome was revision surgery at 2, 4, and 6 years. Univariate analysis was conducted on demographic variables (age, sex) and comorbidities in the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index...

Illness Anxiety Disorder and Distress among Female Medical and Nursing Students
CONCLUSION: The highlights that medical and nursing students are susceptible to developing anxiety-related disorders and distress that may have negative impacts on their academic achievements and future careers. Both nursing and medical faculty should help in identifying strategies to support the students' mental health and well-being.PMID:38655550 | PMC:PMC11037515 | DOI:10.2174/0117450179277976231115070100 (Source: Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health)

Classroom recordings: Utilization and influence on course performance
CONCLUSION: Videos were used < 1 hour per week, primarily to study for exams. When used as a study tool, video use decreased course performance. Rewatching videos to prepare for exams may be mistaken for mastery of material.PMID:38654584 | DOI:10.7899/JCE-23-21 (Source: The Journal of Chiropractic Education)

Anatomical variation is the norm: A novel curriculum framework
This study therefore aimed to (i) propose a whole-of-course curriculum framework to guide academic development and implementation of anatomical variation resources and assessment; and (ii) assess the depth of anatomical variation knowledge in a multiyear undergraduate health-science cohort (n = 152) at the Queensland University of Technology. Current anatomical variation pedagogy, and subsequently the need for the curriculum framework, were explored using a scoping review protocol. As part of this study, anatomical variation was novelly defined as macroscopic differences in morpholo gy (shape and size), topography (loc...

Gender diversity in radiology: Shedding light on the 256 shades of grey
ConclusionThis study has revealed multiple reasons why women may not pursue specialty training in Clinical Radiology. Notable differences were found in the reasonings provided by men and women. Limited Clinical Radiology exposure and mentorship in medical school result in a lack of interest in this specialty as a career option. A proposed solution is to offer more medical school lectures and more junior doctor rotations to debunk stereotypes that may be negatively impacting opinions on Clinical Radiology. More mentorship of Medical Students and Junior Doctors, particularly from women, may also help decrease the gender gap....

Is a smartphone application (BlueIce) acceptable and safe for university students who self-harm: an open study
Conclusion BlueIce was an acceptable, safe and helpful source of support for university students struggling with self-harm thoughts and/or behaviours. This builds on previous findings with adolescents and suggests that BlueIce could be a particularly acceptable and helpful resource for university students. (Source: BMJ Open)
