The effects of school career guidance on career choices of radiography undergraduate students at a University in Gauteng Province, South Africa
Studies have revealed that learners begin to make their career choices at a reasonably early stage of their lives. Career guidance in South Africa was made part of the curriculum in schools to introduce learners to different careers and guide them in their career choices. Due to historical disparities, this has not been adequately implemented in all schools. As a result of this, some learners often make uninformed career choices. The aim of this study was to determine if students who enrolled in a radiography undergraduate program at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) had prior knowledge about the radiography ...

A scoping review of the questionnaires used for the assessment of the perception of undergraduate students of the learning environment in healthcare professions education programs
AbstractThe learning environment (LE) includes social interactions, organizational culture, structures, and physical and virtual spaces that influence the learning experiences of students. Despite numerous studies exploring the perception of healthcare professional students (HCPS) of their LE, the validity evidence of the utilized questionnaires remains unclear. This scoping review aimed to identify questionnaires used to examine the perception of undergraduate HCPS of their LE and to assess their validity evidence. Five key concepts were used: (1) higher education; (2) questionnaire; (3) LE; (4) perception; and (5) health...

“Teaching capital”– a sociological analysis of medical educator portfolios for promotion
AbstractMedical educator portfolios (MEP) are increasingly recognized as a tool for developing and documenting teaching performance in Health Professions Education. However, there is a need to better understand the complex interplay between institutional guidelines and how teachers decode those guidelines and assign value to teaching merits. To gain a deeper understanding of this dynamic, this study employed a sociological analysis to understand how medical educators aspiring to professorships use MEPs to display their teaching merits and how cultural capital is reflected in these artefacts. We collected 36 medical educato...

Impact of immersive realities and metaverse in the university training for health professions and medicine: a systematic review of preliminary evidence
ConclusionThe review provides that Metaverse results still need to be implemented; VR was a valid tool to support the improvement of AP and LS of students; VR turns out to be more widespread than other XRs. There are several discrepancies in the studies that confirm the need to promote the understanding of VR simulation ’s effects on the acquisition of skills. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

Prevalence and determinants of behavioral risk factors for noncommunicable diseases among students aged 13-19 years in Turkey
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of clustering of modifiable risk factors for NCDs was high among students aged 13-19 years in Turkey, and there is a need to mount effective interventions. Risk factors for these diseases are often preventable: Appropriate health interventions before, during, and after pregnancy as well as throughout childhood and adolescence can significantly reduce their prevalence.PMID:38679546 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2024.01.009 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Association between Covishield vaccine and menstrual disturbance. Findings from a cross-sectional study among participants of Zero TB cohort in India
CONCLUSION: Menstrual problems were reported by Covishield vaccinees, but they were minor and reversible within three months and do not constitute a ground for vaccine hesitancy. Academic performance of students in an accelerated medical pathway
This study examines the Fully Integrated Readiness for Service Training (FIRST) program, a three-year accelerated pathway, to assess its impact on students' academic performance preparedness for residency. In this observational study, we compared the academic outcomes of FIRST program students to traditional four-year curriculum students from 2018 to 2023. We analyzed multiple metrics, including exam performance (United States Medical Licensing Examination Step scores, shelf exam scores, and pre-clinical course scores) and clinical performance scores during the application and individualization phases. Analysis of Variance...

I'll Have What She's Having (But Not What They're Having): The Moderating Role of Group Membership in the Effect of Social Norms on Food Choice in an Online Environment
Appetite. 2024 Apr 26:107374. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107374. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe modern food-rich environment has contributed to the rise of unhealthy diets linked to noncommunicable diseases. Previous in-person research has found that the effect of social norms on food intake is greater when set by a perceived in-group member relative to an out-group member. Given recent increased social media use, we investigated whether this effect of group membership extends to food choices and to normative information presented remotely online. Participants (N = 179 female university students, 18-32 years) viewed a Fa...
