Role of nutraceuticals on neurodegenerative diseases: neuroprotective and immunomodulant activity
Nat Prod Res. 2021 Dec 29:1-18. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2021.2020265. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeurodegeneration is a degenerative process characterized by the progressive loss of the structure and function of neurons that involves several immune cells. It is the primary cause of dementia and other several syndromes, known as neurodegenerative diseases. These disorders are age-related and it is estimated that by 2040 there will be approximately 81.1 million people suffering from these diseases. In addition to the traditional pharmacological therapy, in recent years nutraceuticals, naturally based compounds with a broad ...

Regeneration of Phytochemicals by Structure-Driven Organization of Microbial Biosynthetic Steps
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2021 Dec 20. doi: 10.1002/anie.202114919. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMedicinal phytochemicals, such as artemisinin and taxol, have impacted the world, and hypericin might do so if its availability issue could be addressed. Hypericin is the hallmark component of Saint John's wort ( Hypericum perforatum L.), an approved depression alleviator documented in the US, European, and British pharmacopoeias with its additional effectiveness against diverse cancers and viruses. However, the academia-to-industry transition of hypericin remain hampered by its low in planta abundance, unfeasible bulk chemical ...

Comparative assessment of proliferation and immunomodulatory potential of Hypericum perforatum plant and callus extracts on mesenchymal stem cells derived adipose tissue from multiple sclerosis patients
ConclusionsHigh concentrations of HP extracts showed effectiveness on AT-MSCs proliferation and immunomodulatory properties with a certain consequence in callus extract. HP extracts may be considered as supplementary treatments for the patients who receiving MSCs transplantation. (Source: Inflammopharmacology)

Identification and characterization of glycosyltransferases catalyzing direct xanthone 4 ‐C‐glycosylation in Hypericum perforatum
Xanthones are compounds with a diphenyl ether skeleton mainly found in plants and often glycosylated at carbon atoms. Although manyC-glycosyltransferases (CGTs) participating in flavoneC-glycosylation have been identified, MiCGT fromMangifera  indica, adding sugar to an open-chain benzophenone skeleton, is the only identified xanthone biosynthesis-related CGT. Here, we identified two CGTs fromHypericum  perforatum that add sugar to the closed-ring xanthone, but not benzophenone. These CGTs catalyze sugar transfer to the C-4 position of norathyriol (1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone) to form isomangiferin (1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy...

St. John ’s Wort ( < b > < i > Hypericum perforatum < /i > < /b > )-Related Acute Kidney Injury
Some herbal products were reported to cause nephrotoxicity through different mechanisms. This case report defines an acute kidney injury (AKI) in a patient who usedHypericum perforatum tea as a sleep disorder remedy. The patient developed AKI after ingestion of tea prepared fromHypericum perforatum and underwent hemodialysis because of acute kidney failure. After 1 week, the kidney recovered, and she was discharged with normal kidney function. This is the first case reported having acute kidney failure caused by ingestion ofHypericum perforatum.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)
