Herb-drug interactions in neuropsychiatric pharmacotherapy - a review of clinically relevant findings
This study reviewed the relevant literature and identified 13 commonly used herbal products - celery, echinacea, ginkgo, ginseng, hydroxycut, kava, kratom, moringa, piperine, rhodiola, St John's wort, terminalia/commiphora ayurvedic mixture and valerian - which have shown clinically relevant interactions with prescription drugs used in the management of neuropsychiatric disorders. The clinical focus is aimed to provide easily accessible information that will be of interest to clinicians, researchers, and the drug-consuming public.PMID:34370637 | DOI:10.2174/1570159X19666210809100357 (Source: Current Neuropharmacology)

Polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols with immunosuppressive activity from Hypericum perforatum and absolute configurations assignment of previously reported analogues
Bioorg Chem. 2021 Jul 6;114:105144. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2021.105144. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHyperformitins A-I (1-9), nine undescribed polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) with double-bond migration, along with four new isomers hyperformitins J-M (10-13), were isolated from Hypericum perforatum. Their structures and absolute configurations were determined by spectroscopic analyses including HRESIMS, IR, UV, NMR, and ECD, as well as optical rotation (OR) calculations. The absolute configurations of previously reported analogues, garsubellins D and C as well as garcinielliptones L and M, were assign...

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy against Propionibacterium acnes biofilms using hypericin (Hypericum perforatum) photosensitizer: in vitro study
AbstractAcne vulgaris is the most recurring skin condition in the world, causing great harm to the physical and psychological well-being of many patients. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has broad therapeutic applicability. The purpose was to evaluate in vitro the photodynamic inactivation againstPropionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) biofilms by using different concentrations of hypericin (Hypericum perforatum) photosensitizer associated with different energies of low-level laser. The biofilms were placed in 96-well microplates with a 6.4-mm diameter surface, by using standard suspensions (2  × 107 CFU/mL) and...

An Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants in Mersin (Turkey)
This study identifies 93 plant taxa belonging to 43 families and records their usage in folk medicine; 83 taxa are wild and the remaining 10 are cultivated. The most commonly used plants belong to Lamiaceae, representing 15.0% of the total, while the Rosaceae, Malvaceae, Hypericaceae, Asteraceae and Cupressaceae families each represented another 5.4%. As a result of this investigation, we determine 189 medicinal usages of 93 taxa. The UV values indicate that the most important medicine plants are Hypericum perforatum (0.80), Cedrus libani (0.78), Quercus coccifera (0.77), Arum dioscoridis (0.76) and Juniperus drupaceae (0....

Advances in Alternative and Integrative Medicine in the Treatment of Depression: A Review of the Evidence
Arch Iran Med. 2021 May 1;24(5):409-418. doi: 10.34172/aim.2021.59.ABSTRACTDepression is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects 300 million people worldwide. Pharmacotherapy is one of the treatments. Due to delay in initiating treatment efficacy and the incomplete response to mono-drug therapy in one-third of patients, new approaches need to be considered. One of the ways to overcome this resistance to treatment and to enhance standard medical practice is to add complementary medicines. We aimed to document research progress from studies on integrative medicine for the treatment of depression. Review ...
