A systematic review was performed to investigate whether the Hi serotype f (Hif) incidence rate has increased globally and to describe its associated disease burden. In the post-Hib vaccine era, evidence shows that the incidence rate of Hif infection is increasing worldwide. In total 94 studies including 2 701 patients reported Hif infections. The estimated pooled incidence rate of Hif infection was 0....

Thirty-day unplanned readmission in hospitalised asthma patients in the USA
Conclusions We found that the overall 30-DR rate for asthma was 11.9% all-cause readmission. Major causes of 30-DR were asthma exacerbation (36.74%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (11.47%), respiratory failure (6.46%), non-specific pneumonia (6.19%), septicaemia (3.61%) and congestive heart failure (3.32%). One-fourth of the revisits occurred in the first week, while half of the revisits took place in the first 2 weeks. Education regarding illness and the importance of medicine compliance could play a significant role in preventing asthma-related readmission. (Source: Postgraduate Medical Journal)

The impact of Piscirickettsia salmonis infection on genome-wide DNA methylation profile in Atlantic Salmon
Genomics. 2022 Oct 13:110503. doi: 10.1016/j.ygeno.2022.110503. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSalmon rickettsial septicaemia (SRS), caused by the bacteria Piscirickettsia salmonis (P. salmonis), is responsible for significant mortality in farmed Atlantic salmon in Chile. Currently there are no effective treatments or preventive measures for this disease, although genetic selection or genome engineering to increase salmon resistance to SRS are promising strategies. The accuracy and efficiency of these strategies are usually influenced by the available biological background knowledge of the disease. The aim of this study was...

In vitro antibacterial activity and in vivo pharmacokinetics of intravenously administered Amikacin-loaded Liposomes for the management of bacterial septicaemia
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2022 Sep 30;220:112892. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2022.112892. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSystemic delivery of amikacin is a widely adopted treatment modality for severe infections like sepsis. However, the current course of treatment requires repeated bolus doses of amikacin, prolonged hospitalization, and continuous therapeutic monitoring to manage the severe adverse effects. Amikacin has short half-life, which further challenges the delivery of sufficient systemic concentrations when administered by intravenous route. To solve this issue, novel delivery systems, amikacin liposomes (Ak-lip...

Estimated daily intake of phthalates, parabens, and bisphenol a in hospitalised very low birth weight infants
Chemosphere. 2022 Oct 4:136687. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.136687. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVery low birth weight infants (VLBW, birth weight (BW) < 1500 g) are exposed to phthalates, parabens and bisphenol A (BPA) early in life. We estimated daily intake (EDI) of these excipients in 40 VLBW infants the first and fifth week of life while hospitalised. Based on urinary samples collected in 2010, EDI wascalculated and compared to the tolerable daily intake (TDI) with hazard quotients (HQs) evaluated. A HQ > 1 indicates that EDI exceeded TDI with increased risk of adverse health effects. EDI was higher in VLBW...

Conditions associated with the initiation of domiciliary care following a hospital admission: a cohort study in East London, England
Conclusion Hospitals are a major referral route into domiciliary care. While patients admitted due to new and acute illnesses account for many domiciliary care packages, exacerbations of long-term conditions and age-related and frailty-related conditions are also important drivers. Cardiac sarcoidosis completely mimicking biventricular arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
AbstractCardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is a chameleon of cardiology, and it can mimic different cardiac diseases; among them is arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM). We admitted a 70-year-old female patient with heart failure symptoms in 2015, who fulfilled all major ECG and non-invasive imaging criteria of biventricular ACM. She was well with the recommended medications for 3  years, showing only isolated cardiac involvement, but in 2018, cervical and mediastinal lymphadenopathy appeared and cervical lymph node core biopsy histology, bronchoalveolar lavage flow cytometry strongly suggested extracardiac sarcoidosis. Therefore, o...
