Surveillance of invasive meningococcal disease in southern Brazil: considerations of an immunization programme
This study aimed to determine the epidemiological profile of IMD in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, three states in southern Brazil. We analysed 1024 IMD cases that had been confirmed by clinical and/or laboratory criteria and reported to the national information system for notifiable diseases between 2015 and 2019. Additionally, we calculated the proportions of serogroup and incidence by age. Of 1024 cases, 562 (55 %) were caused by serogroup C. Furthermore, serogroup W was responsible for almost half of the cases among children younger than 5 years between 2017 and 2018, with an overall incidence of 1.5 ca...

Aeromonas hydrophila ST251 and Aeromonas dhakensis are major emerging pathogens of striped catfish in Vietnam
DiscussionThis present study highlights for the first time A. dhakensis, a zoonotic species that can cause fatal human infection, to be an emerging pathogen in aquaculture in Vietnam, with widespread distribution in recent outbreaks of motile Aeromonas septicaemia in striped catfish. It also confirms vAh ST251 to have been present in the Mekong Delta since at least 2013. Appropriate isolates of A. dhakensis and vAh should be included in vaccines to prevent outbreaks and reduce the threat posed by antibiotic resistance. (Source: Frontiers in Microbiology)

Acanthamoeba meningoencephalitis causing secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in an immunocompetent patient: A first case report
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of Acanthamoeba meningoencephalitis causing secondary HLH. Our case highlights this rare association and the need for extensive clinical and laboratory evaluation of suspected patients by a multidisciplinary team.PMID:36680356 | DOI:10.1177/14782715221149709 (Source: Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 152: Viral Haemorrhagic Septicemia Virus (VHSV) Isolated from Atlantic Herring, Clupea harengus, Causes Mortality in Bath Challenge on Juvenile Herring
gen Olesen Viral hemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) has been demonstrated to cause high mortalities in a wide range of teleosts, farmed as well as wild. In Europe, VHSV of genotypes Ib, Id, II, and III have been detected in wild fish, including Atlantic herring Clupea harengus, but disease outbreaks have not been observed in Atlantic herring and the effects on wild stocks are not well documented. Here, we have tested two VHSV isolates from herring (genotypes Ib and III, from the western coasts of Norway and Denmark, respectively) in a challenge experiment with herring (mean weight 2.59 g, SD 0.71 g) caught on the wes...

Tociluzimab administation and monitoring in Covid-19
Conclusions: TCZ seems safe. Infections within 3 months approach 30%. Our cohort does not have a control group, and we have not corrected for confounders, but BBV serology must be sent- increased vigilance is required. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Revealing image of arterial spin labelling in posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome
A 31-year-old postpartum woman presented with a generalised tonic–clonic seizure on the seventh day of delivery. The antepartum period was uneventful, and there was no significant medical history. Examination showed elevated blood pressure (160/100) and a disoriented patient. MRI of the brain showed hyperintensities in bilateral parieto-occipital areas (figure 1A–E) suggestive of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). Pulsed arterial spin labelling (ASL) showed hyperperfusion in corresponding areas (figure 1F,G). Electroencephalography showed delta range slowing in the left parieto-occipital leads...

< em > Haemophilus influenzae < /em > type f in the post- < em > Haemophilus influenzae < /em > type b vaccination era: a systematic review
J Med Microbiol. 2022 Oct;71(10). doi: 10.1099/jmm.0.001606.ABSTRACTSince the introduction of Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) serotype b (Hib) vaccination, reports of increasing incidence rates of non-Hib serotypes have emerged. A systematic review was performed to investigate whether the Hi serotype f (Hif) incidence rate has increased globally and to describe its associated disease burden. In the post-Hib vaccine era, evidence shows that the incidence rate of Hif infection is increasing worldwide. In total 94 studies including 2 701 patients reported Hif infections. The estimated pooled incidence rate of Hif infection was 0....
