Heatwave-associated Vibrio infections in Germany, 2018 and 2019
ConclusionsDuring the summers of 2018 and 2019, severe heatwaves facilitated increased numbers ofVibrio infections in Germany. Since climate change is likely to favour the proliferation of these bacteria, a further increase inVibrio-associated diseases is expected. (Source: Eurosurveillance)

Ecological diversification reveals routes of pathogen emergence in endemic Vibrio vulnificus populations [Microbiology]
Pathogen emergence is a complex phenomenon that, despite its public health relevance, remains poorly understood. Vibrio vulnificus, an emergent human pathogen, can cause a deadly septicaemia with over 50% mortality rate. To date, the ecological drivers that lead to the emergence of clinical strains and the unique genetic traits that... (Source: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)

Risk factors, bacteriological profile and outcome of surgical site infections following orthopaedic surgery
CONCLUSION: Despite latest surgical amenities, meticulous sterilization protocols and pre-operative antibiotic prophylaxis, SSI continues to be present in healthcare settings. The increase in duration of hospital stay due to SSI adds to additional burden to an already resource-constrained healthcare system.PMID:34540151 | PMC:PMC8408022 | DOI:10.18502/ijm.v13i2.5976 (Source: Iranian Journal of Microbiology)

Institutional mortality rate and cause of death at health facilities in Ghana between 2014 and 2018
ConclusionsThis study examined national trends in mortality rate and cause of death at health facilities in Ghana. Ghana recorded a decrease in institutional mortality throughout the study. NCDs and infections were the leading causes of death, giving a double-burden of diseases. There is a need to enhance efforts towards healthcare and health promotion programmes for NCDs and infectious diseases at facility and community levels as outlined in the 2020 National Health Policy of Ghana. Mycotic aneurysm of the ascending aorta due to < em > Escherichia coli < /em > : a case report
Acta Cardiol. 2021 Sep 5:1-4. doi: 10.1080/00015385.2021.1973774. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAscending aorta mycotic aneurysm is a rare entity. It is a life-threatening condition because of the possibility of aortic dissection, or rupture. Escherichia coli is recognised as an uncommon cause of aortic mycotic aneurysm. An 81-year-old woman with a history of Escherichia coli pyelonephritis 4 months previously, was admitted to our centre for a mycotic aneurysm of the ascending aorta caused by Escherichia coli. She was successfully treated by urgent in situ replacement of the ascending aorta with a cryopreserved homograft, ...

Complete genome sequencing and comparative analysis of Citrobacter koseri CKNJ, a strain isolated from patient with endogenous endophthalmitis
Jpn J Infect Dis. 2021 Aug 31. doi: 10.7883/yoken.JJID.2021.334. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCitrobacter koseri is an opportnistic pathogen can cause a variety of diseases. Though the mortality rate of C. koseri infections is high but there is a paucity of clinical information on them. Furthermore, the genomic features of this species are poorly studied. Herein, we presented a patient with endogenous endophthalmitis secondary to septicaemia, and collected a C. koseri isolate, CKNJ, from the blood of the patient. Whole genome sequencing revealed that the CKNJ harbors no plasmid and codes for 67 putative virulence factors....
